Raffaella Reggi won the title by defeating Vicki Nelson-Dunbar 6–4, 6–4 in the final. Reggi became the last Italian tennis player, male or female, on winning the tournament. No other Italian player reached the final until the 2014 edition, where Sara Errani lost against Serena Williams. [1] [2]

Steffi Graf was the defending champion, and she successfully defended her title by defeating Natasha Zvereva in the final, 6–0, 6–0, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1988 French Open. The official time of the match given on the scoresheet was 34 minutes, however just 32 minutes of playing time, split into two periods of nine and 23 minutes due to a rain break. It is the only "double bagel" Grand Slam final of the Open Era.

With 9 WTA singles titles and 27 doubles titles she is the Italian tennis player winning the highest number of WTA titles ever. She entered in Top 10 on 11 June 2012, remaining there for 94 straight weeks, and reaching her career-high singles ranking of world No. 5 on 20 May 2013. Became the world No. 1 in doubles for the first time on 10 September 2012. She was the year-end No. 1 doubles player in both 2013 and 2014, and has held the top ranking for a combined total of 87 weeks.

Maria Sharapova defeated Sara Errani in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2012 French Open. This was Sharapova's first French Open title and she completed the career Grand Slam. It was her first Grand Slam since winning the 2008 Australian Open and her first since major shoulder surgery which threatened to end her career four years prior. Sharapova only lost one set the entire tournament, to Klára Zakopalová in the fourth round.
Serena Williams defeated Agnieszka Radwańska in the final, 6–1, 5–7, 6–2 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships. It was her fifth Wimbledon singles title and her 14th major singles title overall. Radwańska became the first Pole to reach a major singles final in the Open Era.
Serena Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final, 6–2, 2–6, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2012 US Open. Azarenka served for the championship and led 5–3 in the third set. It was the first time since 1995 that the final went to three sets. With the victory, Williams became the third woman in history to win Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open in the same season after Steffi Graf and her sister Venus Williams. Williams lost only one set during the tournament, to Azarenka in the final.
Victoria Azarenka was the defending champion, and successfully defended her title, defeating Li Na in the final 4–6, 6–4, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2013 Australian Open.
Li Na defeated Dominika Cibulková in the final, 7–6(7–3), 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2014 Australian Open. Li became the first Asian Australian Open champion and sixth woman to win the title after being match point down.

Monica Seles won her first Grand Slam tennis tournament, defeating previous year's finalist Steffi Graf in the final, 7–6(8–6), 6–4, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1990 French Open. Seles saved four set points in the first-set tiebreaker. Aged 16 and 6 months, she became the youngest Grand Slam singles winner in the Open Era, only to be surpassed by Martina Hingis seven years later. Seles remains the youngest French Open champion. Arantxa Sánchez Vicario was the defending champion, but she lost in the second round to Mercedes Paz.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Šafářová defeated Chan Yung-jan and Zheng Jie in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–5), to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2015 Australian Open. Mattek-Sands and Šafářová were playing for the first time as a team in a tournament and each won their first Grand Slam women's doubles title. The victory made them the first new pairing to win the women's doubles tournament at the Australian Open since 2005, as well as the first to win a Grand Slam women's doubles title since the 2007 US Open. After defeating five seeded pairings en route to the win, they became the first unseeded women's doubles duo to clinch the title at the Australian Open since 2012.
