1985 saw the dawn of another new era in Saudi Arabian football with the league once again cut into two groups.

Al-Ta'ee were once again promoted, replacing city neighbours Al Jabalain who were relegated the previous season.

The winners and runners up of each six team group advanced to the finals phase to crown a champion, of which Al-Hilal won and defended the championship.

Teams finishing third and fourth in the group phases then played off for classification purposes and the teams finishing 5th and 6th played out a relegation pool. Newly promoted Al Kawkab were relegated along with Al-Riyadh.

Al-Riyadh SC is a professional football club based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It currently plays in the Saudi Pro League. It was established in 1953 as Ahli Al-Riyadh, then changed its name to Al-Yamamah and finally to Al-Riyadh. Best known for its football team, Al-Riyadh also have squads in other sports.

The 1986 Asian Club Championship was the 6th edition of the annual Asian club football competition hosted by Asian Football Confederation. Several Asian clubs started the qualifying round in Fall of 1986. The final round was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in December 1986.

The 2006–07 Saudi Premier League was the 31st Saudi Professional League season and the last to feature the Golden Four format. Al-Shabab were the defending champions, but they were eliminated by Al-Wahda in the first stage of the Golden Four. Al-Ittihad, who finished second with a 5-point difference from first place Al-Hilal, went on to win the league 2–1 in Riyadh. Hamad Al-Montashari's header gave Al-Ittihad their 7th league title in the 94th minute of the match.

Al-Shabab won the championship again for the second time and the second time in a row after winning the end of season championship final on penalties against Al-Ettifaq.

Al-Hilal won the championship for the 6th time in 1990.

In December 1990, the Saudi Federation decided to merge all the football League with the King's Cup in one tournament and the addition of the Golden Box. The Golden Box would be an end of season knockout competition played between the top four teams of the regular league season.

The 1981–82 season saw the merge of both the Saudi Premier League and the Saudi First Division of concern for the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualification process.

The 1982–83 Saudi Premier League was the 7th season of Saudi Premier League since its establishment in 1976. Al-Ittihad were the defending champions, having won their 1st title in the previous season. The campaign began on 16 December 1982 and ended on 8 April 1983. The number of teams in the league was reduced from the previous season. The league was contested by 10 teams, the top 5 teams from Groups A and B.

The 1976-77 season saw the start of the first ever top division professional football league in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

1977 was the second season of the Saudi Premier League of football.

The 1978–79 season was the first season involving foreign players. Al-Hilal won the championship for a second time.

The 1983–84 Saudi Premier League was the 8th season of Saudi Premier League since its establishment in 1976. Al-Ettifaq were the defending champions, having won their 1st title in the previous season. The campaign began on 5 October 1983 and ended on 17 February 1984. The league was contested by 10 teams the top 8 teams from the previous season as well as Al-Wehda and Al-Riyadh, who joined as the promoted clubs from the 1982–83 First Division.

1984 saw the 9th season in Saudi Arabian top-flight football. Al-Hilal won the title for the 3rd time and the first since 1979.

The 1986–87 Saudi Premier League season reverted to a regular home and away league format instead of the previous season's group phases.

The tournament included all top-performing clubs from their respective regional leagues of the East, West, and Central regions. The tournament was titled The Categorization League, because it categorized which clubs play in the Premier league and which clubs play in the Saudi First Division and was a transitional tournament, making an end to Saudi Regional Leagues.

The 2016–17 Saudi Professional League was the 41st season of Saudi Professional League, the top Saudi professional league for association football clubs, since its inception in 1976. The season started on 11 August 2016 and concluded on 4 May 2017.

The 2020–21 season was the 64th season of competitive association football in Saudi Arabia. The season featured the first-ever Women's Football League in Saudi Arabia.

The 2021–22 Saudi Second Division was the 46th season of the Saudi Second Division since its establishment in 1976. The season began on 29 September 2021 and concluded on 20 April 2022 with the final. The group stage draw was held on 8 June 2021.
