Ajax had won the Cup Winners' Cup tournament this year, therefore the Netherlands were allowed to send two teams to next year's edition of 1987–88. This way, finalists FC Den Haag also qualified.

The Eerste Divisie is the second-highest tier of football in the Netherlands. It is linked with the top-level Eredivisie via promotion/relegation systems. The 2006–07 KNVB Cup was the 89th edition of the tournament. The competition started on 26 August 2006 and the final was held on 6 May 2007 at the Feyenoord Stadion in Rotterdam.
