Sylmar is a suburban neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley and is the northernmost neighborhood within the city of Los Angeles. Historically known for its profusion of sylvan olive orchards, Sylmar can trace its past to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission. In 1890, olive production was begun systematically. The Sylmar climate was also considered healthy, and so a sanitarium was established, the first in a series of hospitals in the neighborhood. There are fourteen public and eight private schools within Sylmar.
Judith Eva Barsi was an American child actress. She began her career in television, making appearances in commercials and television series, as well as the 1987 film Jaws: The Revenge. She also provided the voices of Ducky in The Land Before Time and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven. She and her mother, Maria, were killed in July 1988 in a double murder–suicide committed in their home by her father, József Barsi.

In their tenth year under head coach Terry Donahue, the Bruins compiled a 9–2–1 record, finished in first place in the Pacific-10 Conference, and were ranked #7 in the final AP Poll. The Bruins went on to defeat #4 Iowa in the 1986 Rose Bowl. Running back Eric Ball was selected as the most valuable player in the 1986 Rose Bowl.

In their 11th year under head coach Terry Donahue, the Bruins compiled an 8–3–1 record, finished in a tie for second place in the Pacific-10 Conference, and were ranked #12 in the final AP Poll. The Bruins went on to defeat BYU in the 1986 Freedom Bowl. On November 1, 1986, UCLA's defense scored three touchdowns against Oregon State.
