The 1987 America East men's basketball tournament was hosted by the higher seeds in head-to-head matchups. The final was held at Matthews Arena on the campus of the Northeastern University. Only the top-8 schools made it to the 1987 tournament, therefore excluding both Colgate and Hartford. Northeastern gained its fourth consecutive and sixth overall America East Conference Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament with its win over Boston University. Northeastern was given the 14th seed in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to Purdue 104–95. Niagara University gained a bid to the NIT and lost in the second round to La Salle 89–81, after beating Seton Hall 74–65.

The 1987 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 64 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 12, 1987, and ended with the championship game on March 30 in New Orleans, Louisiana. A total of 63 games were played.
The Northeastern Huskies are the athletic teams representing Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. They compete in thirteen varsity team sports: men's and women's hockey ; men's baseball, men's and women's basketball, women's field hockey and volleyball, swimming, and men's and women's soccer, and men's and women's rowing, track and cross-country.
The Albany Great Danes men's basketball team is the basketball team that represent the University at Albany, State University of New York in Albany, New York. The school's team currently competes in the America East Conference and plays its home games at SEFCU Arena. The team played in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 2006, 2007, 2013, and 2014, 2015. They also made the CIT in 2016 and 2017, and are currently coached by Dwayne Killings.

The final was held on March 12, at Patrick Gym on the campus of the University of Vermont. Vermont gained its third consecutive berth to the NCAA tournament with its win over Northeastern. Vermont was given the 13th seed in the Austin Regional of the NCAA Tournament and lost in the second round to Michigan State 72–61, after upsetting #4 Syracuse 60–57 in overtime. Both Boston University and Northeastern gained a bid to the NIT and lost in the first round to Georgetown and Memphis respectively.

Vermont gained its first ever America East Championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament with its win over Boston University. Vermont was given the 16th seed in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to Arizona 80–51. Boston University gained a bid to the NIT and lost in the first round to St. John's 73–57.

Hofstra gained its first America East Conference Championships and an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament with its win over Delaware. Hofstra was given the 14th seed in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to Oklahoma State 86–66. Delaware gained a bid to the NIT and lost in the first round to Villanova 72–63.

The final was held at The Hart Center on the campus at the College of Holy Cross. Holy Cross gained their first and only America East Conference Championship in the first ever tournament as well as an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament with its win over Boston University. Holy Cross was given the 11th seed in the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to Maryland 84–78. Boston University gained a bid to the NIT and lost in the first round to Boston College 95–74.
The Stony Brook Seawolves baseball team represents Stony Brook University in NCAA Division I men's college baseball. Stony Brook currently competes in the CAA and plays its home games on Joe Nathan Field. Matt Senk has coached the team since the beginning of the 1991 season. The team has won the America East tournament six times in 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2019. In 2011, the Seawolves claimed their first America East regular season championship. Stony Brook has participated in the NCAA tournament on six separate occasions, winning its first game in 2010.
