Czechoslovakia's Miloslav Mečíř defeated the United States' Tim Mayotte in the final, 3–6, 6–2, 6–4, 6–2, to win the gold medal in Men's Singles tennis at the 1988 Summer Olympics. It was Czechoslovakia's first medal at the event. The United States' Brad Gilbert and Sweden's Stefan Edberg won the bronze medals. It was Sweden's first men's singles Olympic medal.

Defending champion Johan Kriek defeated Steve Denton in a rematch of the previous year's final, 6–3, 6–3, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1982 Australian Open. The format of this year's tournament was best of 5 sets in the first two rounds, best of 3 sets in rounds 3 and 4, then best of 5 sets for the rest of the tournament.

Boris Becker was the defending champion but did not compete that year.

First-seeded Bill Scanlon defeated Tim Wilkison 6–7, 6–3, 3–6, 7–6, 6–0 to win the 1981 Heineken Open singles competition. John Sadri was the champion but did not defend his title.
