Fourth-seeded Arantxa Sánchez Vicario won the title, defeating Monica Seles in the final 7–6(7–5), 0–6, 6–2, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1998 French Open. This marked the last time Sánchez Vicario defeated Seles at any tournament. It was also the last major final in which either Sánchez Vicario or Seles played.

Steffi Graf defeated defending champion Arantxa Sánchez Vicario in the final 7–5, 4–6, 6–0 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1995 French Open. Sánchez Vicario lost the world No. 1 ranking to Graf following this tournament, and would never recapture it. That would remain the last time until 2013 that the top two seeded players would play each other in the French Open final.

17-year-old Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated two-time defending champion Steffi Graf in the final, 7–6(8–6), 3–6, 7–5, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1989 French Open. This ended Graf's winning streak of Grand Slam singles titles at five. Graf served for the championship at 5–3 in the third set, but lost the game at love and won only three more points in the match from that point. It was the first of Sánchez Vicario's three French Open titles, which she also won in 1994 and 1998.

Gabriela Sabatini defeated the two-time defending champion Steffi Graf in the final, 6–2, 7–6(7–4), to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1990 U.S. Open. The final was a rematch of the 1988 US Open final and the 1989 US Open first semifinal. Sabatini became the first Argentine woman to win the title. It was also Sabatini's first victory over Graf at a major. This was Sabatini's only major singles title, despite reaching eighteen semifinals and three finals throughout her career.

Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated the defending champion Steffi Graf in the final, 1–6, 7–6(7–3), 6–4, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1994 U.S. Open. She dropped just one set during the tournament.

The 1989 Bologna Open was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Bologna, Italy that was part of the 1989 Nabisco Grand Prix circuit. It was the fifth edition of the tournament and was played from 12 June until 18 June 1989. Sixth-seeded Javier Sánchez won the singles title.

Emilio Sánchez was the defending champion, but lost in the semifinal to Horacio de la Peña.
