The 1996 Rugby League Premiership Trophy was the 22nd end of season Rugby League Premiership competition and the first in the fully professional Super League era. [1] This competition was separate to the Super League Championship awarded to St. Helens, and continued a long tradition in British rugby league of crowning a season Champion and an end of season Premier.

The year 1996's Stones Bitter Super League I was the official name for the 102nd season of top-level rugby league football, and the first year of Europe's new championship: Super League. It is also the first season of rugby league to be played in summer. The competition featured all eleven teams from the 1995-96 RFL First Division plus one expansion club, Paris Saint-Germain.

The Super League is the top-level of the British rugby league system. At present the league consists of twelve teams, of which ten are from Northern England, reflecting the sport's geographic heartland within the UK, one from London and one from southern France.

The 1996 Wigan season was the 101st season in the club's rugby league history and the first season in the newly formed Super League. Coached by Graeme West and captained by Shaun Edwards, Wigan competed in Super League I and finished in 2nd place, but went on to win the Premiership Final at Old Trafford against St. Helens. The club also competed in the 1996 Challenge Cup, but were knocked out in the fifth round by First Division side Salford Reds, and was the first time the club had failed to win the trophy since 1987.

The World Club Challenge is an annual rugby league competition between the winners of the Australian National Rugby League and the British Super League, for the de facto club world championship of the sport.

In British rugby league, winning the Treble currently refers to winning the Super League Grand Final, League Leaders' Shield, and Challenge Cup in the same season. Up until 1973 this was achieved by winning the Championship Final, finishing top of the league during the regular season, and winning the Challenge Cup.

The St Helens R.F.C. – Wigan Warriors rivalry is a historic local rivalry between the rugby league clubs St Helens and the Wigan Warriors, based in North West England. The rivalry is born out of relative proximity of the two towns, but as two of the most successful clubs in British rugby it has become a marquee event in the calendar.

The 1987 Rugby League Premiership was the 13th end of season Rugby League Premiership competition.

The 1994 Rugby League Premiership was the 20th end-of-season Rugby League Premiership competition.

The 1995 Rugby League Premiership was the 21st end of season Rugby League Premiership competition. Played during the 1994–95 Rugby Football League season, the winners were Wigan. Kris Radlinski was named man-of-the-match so was awarded the Harry Sunderland Trophy.

The 1997 Rugby League Premiership Trophy was the 23rd and final end of season Rugby League Premiership competition and the second in the Super League era. Following this season it was merged into the Super League Championship so one true national champion could be determined.
