Roger Federer defeated Lleyton Hewitt in the final, 6–0, 7–6(7–3), 6–0 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2004 US Open. It was his first US Open title and fourth major title overall. He became first man to capture the Australian Open, the Wimbledon Championships, and the US Open in a season since Jimmy Connors in 1974. With the win, he became the tenth man to win three majors in a calendar year.
Two-time defending champion Pete Sampras defeated Andre Agassi in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 7–5 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1999 Wimbledon Championships. It was his record-breaking sixth Wimbledon title and record-equalling twelfth major singles title overall. Sampras' victory over Agassi in the final is often cited as one of the greatest performances in a Wimbledon final. However, despite his victory, Sampras lost the world No. 1 ranking to Agassi, who had recently won the French Open and was attempting to complete the Channel Slam.
Gustavo Kuerten defeated Magnus Norman in the final, 6–2, 6–3, 2–6, 7–6(8–6) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2000 French Open. It was his second French Open title and second major title overall.
