The 2000 Women's Olympic Water Polo Qualifying Tournament was a tournament in which three places were available for teams to qualify for the first Olympic women's polo competition.

Water polo has been part of the Summer Olympics program since the second games, in 1900. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2000 Summer Olympics. Hungary has been the most successful country in men's tournament, while the United States is the only team to win multiple times at the women's tournament since its introduction.

The water polo competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia saw Hungary’s return to the gold medal platform and the introduction of the women’s tournament. The Australian women had lobbied the IOC hard for the inclusion of women’s water polo in the Olympics, including showing up at the airport dressed only in their swimsuits during one pre-Olympic visit by members of the IOC.

Individual awards

Yuliya Sergeevna Petrova is a Russian water polo player, who won the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She was named Most Valuable Player at the 2000 Women's Water Polo Olympic Qualifier in Palermo, Italy, where the Women's National Team qualified for the Sydney Olympics.

Francesca Cristiana Conti is a female water polo goalkeeper from Italy, who won the gold medal with the Women's National Team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.

The United States, represented by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. 2016 Womens Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournament

The 2016 Women's Water Polo Olympic Qualification Tournament was held at the Groenhovenbad in Gouda, Netherlands, from 21 to 28 March 2016. The top four teams advanced to the Olympics. The mascot of the event was an orange lion in blue clothes called Swimba.

Water polo competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru are scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 10. The venue for the competition is the Water polo pool located at the Villa María del Triunfo cluster. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams competed in each tournament. This means a total of 176 athletes are scheduled to compete.
