The Governor of Oyo State is elected using the plurality voting system.
A total of five candidates registered with the Independent National Electoral Commission to contest in the election. [26] PDP candidate Rashidi Ladoja won election for a first tenure, defeating AD Incumbent Governor, Lam Adesina, and three other candidates. [7] [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] [32]
The total number of registered voters in the state was 2,209,953. However, only 51.4% (i.e. 1,130,142) of registered voters participated in the excerise. [6] [7]

Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is a Nigerian businessman who became governor of Oyo State in Nigeria on 29 May 2003 as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was impeached in January 2006, but reinstated in December 2006. His term ended in 2007. Ladoja became a member of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in December 2018.
Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala was a Nigerian politician and police officer. He served as governor of Oyo State in 2006, and again from 2007 to 2011. He was the candidate of the ADP in the 2019 Governorship election in Oyo State.
The 2019 Oyo State gubernatorial election occurred on March 9, 2019, the PDP nominee Seyi Makinde won the election, defeating Adebayo Adelabu of the APC.
