He was named head football coach at the University of Richmond on December 14, 2016 after spending eight years as head coach of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The Spiders compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision as members of the Coastal Athletic Association Football Conference.

Chattanooga beat Indiana State at home for the program's first-ever home playoff win in the Second Round of the NCAA Division I Football Championship playoffs before falling to New Hampshire, 35–30, in the Quarterfinal.
