The Thomas Cup, sometimes called the World Men's Team Championships, is an international badminton competition among teams representing member nations of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport's global governing body. The championships have been conducted every two years since the 1982 tournament, amended from being conducted every three years since the first tournament held in 1948–1949.
The Sudirman Cup is the world mixed team badminton championship which takes place every two years. It is held in the same venue for the IBF World Championships in the same year until International Badminton Federation decided to split the two tournaments starting from 2003. There are five matches in every round: men and women's singles, men and women's doubles and mixed doubles. The Cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). The first Sudirman Cup tournament took place in Bung Karno Stadium, Central Jakarta, Indonesia on May 24 – May 29, 1989.
The Uber Cup, sometimes called the World Team Championships for Women, is a major international badminton competition contested by women's national badminton teams. First held in 1956–1957 and contested at three year intervals, it has been contested every two years since 1984 when its scheduled times and venues were merged with those of Thomas Cup, the world men's team championship. In 2007, BWF decided to have Thomas and Uber Cup finals separated again but the proposal was ultimately abandoned. The Uber Cup is named after a former British women's badminton player, Betty Uber, who in 1950 had the idea of hosting a women's event similar to the men's. She also made the draw for the 1956–1957 inaugural tournament, which took place at Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire, England.

Founded in 1934 as the International Badminton Federation (IBF) with nine member nations, the BWF has since expanded to 176 member nations around the world. On 24 September 2006, at the Extraordinary General Meeting in Madrid, it was decided to adopt the new name Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Her current partner is Tontowi Ahmad since 2010, after being separated from her previous partner, Nova Widianto. She also won three titles in a row from 2012–2014 at All England Badminton Championships, one of the most prestigious and oldest tournament in the sport. Been entering the top level since 18 years old, her tactical awareness, game vision, and dominance at the front court are considered as one of the best in the tour. In 2016, she and Tontowi Ahmad became the first Indonesian mixed doubles pair to win gold medal at the Olympic Games by beating Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying of Malaysia.

Kim Astrup Sørensen is a Danish badminton player. In 2011, he won a gold in the mixed doubles event and a bronze medal in the boys' doubles event at the European Junior Badminton Championships. In 2016, he won a silver medal at the European Championships in the men's doubles event partnered with Anders Skaarup Rasmussen. He also joined the Denmark national badminton team compete at the 2016 Thomas Cup in Kunshan, China. He and his teammates won a gold medal for the first time after beating Indonesia 3-2 in the final.
Kate Foo Kune is a badminton player from Mauritius. She began playing badminton in Mauritius at age six. Her first major tournament participation was 2013 BWF World Championships in China, where she lost in the first round of women's singles to Sarah Walker of England. Foo Kune represented her country at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was the flagbearer for Mauritius during the Parade of Nations.
The 2017 Sudirman Cup was the 15th edition of the Sudirman Cup, the biennial international badminton championship contested by the mixed national teams of the member associations of Badminton World Federation (BWF), since its inception in 1989. The tournament was hosted by Gold Coast, Australia, between 21 and 28 May 2017. It will be the first time this event is hosted outside Asia and Europe since its establishment in 1989.
