The draw for the semi-finals was made by drawing the winners of Group A against the runners-up of Group 2 and vice versa, with group winners having home advantage. Glentoran beat Drogheda United 1–0 in the first semi-final, which was played at United Park in Drogheda, [1] while Cork City overcame Derry City by the same scoreline at the Brandywell Stadium in Derry. The final took place on November 1, 2008, at Turners Cross stadium in front of 5,500, a sell out crowd, in Cork, where Cork City came from behind to beat Glentoran 2-1 and win the competition for the first time. [3]

Dungannon Swifts Football Club is a Northern Irish, semi-professional football club playing in the NIFL Premiership. The club, founded in 1949, has risen from the Mid-Ulster league to the top tier in Northern Ireland since its election to the Irish League First Division in 1997. Dungannon earned promotion from Irish League First Division to the Premier Division in the 2002–03 season.

Edward Patterson, better known as Eddie Patterson is the former manager of NIFL Premiership clubs Cliftonville and Glentoran. He was relieved of his duties as Glentoran manager on Saturday 17 October 2015. Despite winning two Irish Cups in three years, the club highlighted deteriorating league positions and performances as the main reason for his dismissal.

The 2007 Setanta Sports Cup was the 3rd staging of the Setanta Sports Cup, a cross-border cup competition that took place between football clubs from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The final was played at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 12 May 2007, and was won by Drogheda United with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Linfield when the scores were level at 1–1 after extra time. Drogheda won the trophy for the second successive year.
