The 2009 Ligue 2 season was the first of the professional competition of the second-tier football in Senegal. The tournament was organized by the Senegalese Football Federation [1] The season began a little earlier on Saturday 2 May and finished on 16 October. It was the first season labelled as a "League" ("Ligue" in French). AS Pikine and ASC Niarry Tally were promoted into Ligue 1 the following season while ASC Xam Xam was relegated into National 1 the following season. Pikine had the highest with 42 points while ASC Niarry Tally was second with 40 points, scoring the most goals, numbering 32.
Geographically almost all clubs were in the western and westernmost parts of the country, two or three of the clubs were not of the Dakar area.
Unlike Ligue 1, there was no group system used in the season, the following year, Ligue 2 would have a group system where the club with the highest number of points was elevated into Ligue 1 in the 2011 season and the lowest relegated into National 1 in the 2011 season.

Since 1977, the winner competes in the Senegalese Super Cup, the super cup of Senegalese football against the national league champion. If the national league champion also wins the FA cup then the second place club in league 1 competes. The winner of the FA cup qualifies for the continental CAF Confederation Cup.

Olympique de Ngor is a football club from Senegal based in the neighborhood of Ngor in the northwest of Dakar. They are one of the top-flight football clubs. Stade de Ngor is their stadium used for football matches. It has a capacity of 10,000. It is the westernmost football club on the African mainland along with Almadies of Ngor, Cape Verde's Tarrafal FC de Monte Trigo is the westernmost football (soccer) club in the whole of Africa since 2014, though it is a lesser and least prominent club.

The season began in late in the mid year on 26 June and finished late on 23 November. It was the first year they played at a professional level, also it was the final season it was titled "Division", the following year would become a "League". AS Douanes won their fifth title, the next club to win three consecutive titles. AS Douanes along with Casa Sport would compete in the 2009 CAF Champions League the following season. ASC Diaraf who won the 2008 Senegalese Cup participated in the 2009 CAF Confederation Cup, along with ASC Yakaar after defeating ASC HLM in a Confederation Cup qualification barrage.

The season began earlier on 20 February and finished on 7 August. It was the second season labelled as a "League". ASC Diaraf won their eleventh and recent title, and a year later would compete in the 2011 CAF Champions League. Touré Kunda who won the 2010 Senegalese Cup participated in the 2011 CAF Confederation Cup. ASC Niarry Tally and ASC HLM participated in the West African Cup for the last time.

The season began earlier on 18 December 2010 and finished on 9 September 2011. It was the third season labelled as a "League". US Ouakam won their first and recent title, and a year later would compete in the 2012 CAF Champions League. ASC Diaraf, second place and the winner of the 2012 Senegalese Cup Casa Sport participated in the 2012 CAF Confederation Cup, it was the last time bringing a second place club, only the cup winner would participate in the following season.

Casa Sport won their first and only title, and a year later would compete in the 2013 CAF Champions League. ASC HLM the winner of the 2012 Senegalese Cup participated in the 2013 CAF Confederation Cup the following season.
The 2015–16 Ligue 1 is the 51st season of top-tier football in Senegal and the eighth professional season. The season began on 8 November 2015. Gorée, an island based club though plays at Dakar's stadium clinched their fourth league title and first since 1984 in the league's final week with a 3-0 road win over last-place Olympique Ngor. In the cup competition, NGB ASC Niarry Tally, winner of the 2015 Senegalese Cup will participate for the first time in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup the following season. Gorée participated in Ligue 2 and finished second in the previous season, one of the few clubs who was in the top of second-tier competition last season to win a title of a first tier competition in West Africa.
