The 2009 Patriot League men's basketball tournament, a part of the 2008-09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place March 4, 2009, as a single-elimination tournament, with games being played at the higher seeds' home courts. The American University Eagles won the league's regular season, and received the number one seed in the tournament. The higher seed in each match-up was the host team for each game. The Eagles became the seventh team to repeat as Patriot League champions when they beat the second seeded Holy Cross Crusaders 73–57 in the championship game, which was broadcast live on ESPN2.

The Patriot League is a collegiate athletic conference comprising private institutions of higher education and two United States service academies based in the Northeastern United States. Outside the Ivy League, it is among the most selective groups of higher education institutions in the NCAA, and has a very high student-athlete graduation rate for both the NCAA graduation success rate and the federal graduation rate.
The MAAC men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The tournament has been held every year since 1982, the MAAC's first season. It is a single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The winner, declared conference champion, receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The MAAC did not receive its automatic bid from the NCAA until 1984.
The Patriot League men's basketball tournament is held at the conclusion of each regular season. The winner of the tournament is awarded an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
Jeffrey Allen Jones is an American college basketball coach and currently the head coach of the Old Dominion University basketball team. Jones took the helm of Old Dominion basketball on April 3, 2013. He previously served as head coach of the American Eagles and the Virginia Cavaliers.
The Bucknell Bison are the athletic teams that represent Bucknell University. The program is a member of the Patriot League for most NCAA Division I sports and Division I FCS in football.
The Holy Cross Crusaders men's basketball team represents the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts in NCAA Division I competition. The team competes in the Patriot League and plays their home games in the Hart Center. The program boasts such notable alumni as Boston Celtics legends Bob Cousy and Tom Heinsohn, and longtime Providence College basketball coach Joe Mullaney. Under coach Doggie Julian, the Crusaders won a national championship in 1947. It is the only school from Massachusetts to win an NCAA tournament.

The American Eagles men's basketball team represents American University in Washington, D.C. in NCAA Division I competition. The school's team competes in the Patriot League and play their home games in Bender Arena. Their rivals include Boston University, Bucknell University, and Navy.
The Holy Cross Crusaders are the athletic teams representing the College of the Holy Cross. They primarily compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Patriot League. In ice hockey, a sport not sponsored by the Patriot League for either sex, the Crusaders are members of two other leagues, with men competing in the Atlantic Hockey Association and women in Hockey East. The men's rowing team is part of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges. Of its 25 varsity teams, Holy Cross supports 12 men's and 13 women's sports, giving Holy Cross the largest ratio of teams-per-enrollment in the country. Holy Cross's athletic teams for both men and women are known as the Crusaders.

Bucknell defeated Lehigh, 81–65, in the championship game to win the Tournament. As a result, Bucknell received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The 1993 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was played at Davis Gym in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania after the conclusion of the 1992–93 regular season. Number two seed Holy Cross defeated top seed Bucknell, 98–73 in the championship game, to win its first Patriot League Tournament title. The Crusaders earned an automatic bid to the 1993 NCAA tournament as #13 seed in the East region.

Number two seed Bucknell defeated top seed Holy Cross, 61–57 in the championship game, to win its first Patriot League Tournament title. The Bison earned an automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA tournament as #14 seed in the Syracuse region. In the round of 64, Bucknell upset #3 seed Kansas 64–63. It was the first win for a Patriot League team in the NCAA Tournament, and the first time Kansas lost an opening-round game since 1978.

They finished the season 10–22, 5–13 in Patriot League play to finish in a tie for last place. As the No. 10 seed in the Patriot League tournament, they defeated Holy Cross in the first round before losing to Navy in the quarterfinals.

The 2022–23 American Eagles men's basketball team represented American University in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Eagles, led by 10th-year head coach Mike Brennan, played their home games at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C. as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 17–15, 7–11 in Patriot League play to finish in a four-way tie for sixth place. As the No. 7 seed in the Patriot League tournament, they defeated Bucknell and Navy before losing to Lafayette in the semifinals.
