The 2011 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Tournament involved eight schools in single-elimination play that determined the national champion of women's NCAA Division I college ice hockey. The Frozen Four was hosted by Mercyhurst College at Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania.
The 2009–10 Minnesota Golden Gophers women's hockey team represented the University of Minnesota during the 2009–10 NCAA Division I women's hockey season. The Golden Gophers were coached by Brad Frost in his third season and played their home games at Ridder Arena. The University of Minnesota hosted the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Ice hockey Tournament's championship game on March 21, 2010 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. It marked the third time that Minneapolis hosted the Frozen Four. The Golden Gophers are a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and attempted to win their fourth NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Championship.

The 2009–10 Western Collegiate Hockey Association women's ice hockey season marked the continuation of the annual tradition of competitive ice hockey among Western Collegiate Hockey Association members.
The Badgers were led by Mark Johnson, who was in his fifth season with the Badgers. The club had a 31–1–4 overall record, and a 23–1–4 conference record. The Badgers won their second straight WCHA regular season title and NCAA title.
The 2008-09 WCHA hockey season was the 10th season of WCHA women's play. Since its inception, WCHA teams have won the national championship every season. The defending NCAA champions were the WCHA's Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.
Zuzana Tomčíková is a Slovak retired ice hockey and ball hockey goaltender, currently working as a sports specialist with the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee. She was a member of the Slovak women's national ice hockey team from age 12 to 26, and represented Slovakia in the 2010 Winter Olympics and at several IIHF Women's World Championships. As a member of the Slovak women's national ball hockey team, she won silver medals at the Ball Hockey World Championship in 2009 and 2013, bronze in 2015, and placed fourth in 2017.
Sara Bauer played for the Wisconsin Badgers women's ice hockey program. In four years, she accumulated 218 points. Bauer won the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award in 2006. During the 2008–09 NCAA season, the WCHA honored its Top 10 Players from the First Decade. Among the group of top 10 players, was former Wisconsin forward Sara Bauer.
The Minnesota State Mavericks women's hockey ice program represents Minnesota State University, Mankato, and participate in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Brianna Decker is an American former professional ice hockey forward who played for the Wisconsin Badgers, Boston Blades, Boston Pride, Calgary Inferno, Professional Women's Hockey Players Association, and United States women's national ice hockey team. She won the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Award while playing for the University of Wisconsin, recognizing the best female ice hockey player in NCAA Division I play. With the Boston Pride, Decker would score the first hat trick in NWHL history on October 25, 2015.
Mallory Deluce is a Canadian ice hockey forward for the Wisconsin Badgers women's ice hockey program. She was drafted 11th overall by Toronto CWHL in the 2011 CWHL Draft. She was named to the Canadian National Women's Hockey team roster that competed in the 2011 IIHF Eight Nations Tournament. In 2015, she was named the recipient of the Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Award.

The Wisconsin Badgers represented the University of Wisconsin in WCHA women's ice hockey during the 2020-21 NCAA Division I women's ice hockey season. In the WCHA Final Faceoff championship game, the Badgers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes by a 3–2 mark in overtime, as Lacey Eden scored the game-winning goal. Appearing in the 2021 NCAA National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Tournament versus the Northeastern Huskies, Daryl Watts scored the game-winning goal in a 2−1 overtime win.
