Held on April 26, 2011, the People's Democratic Party nominee Sule Lamido won the election, defeating Mohammed Badaru Abubakar of the Action Congress of Nigeria. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was later scheduled to hold three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.
