Almaty, formerly known as Alma-Ata and Verny, is the largest city in Kazakhstan, with a population of about 2,000,000 people, about 11% of the country's total population, and more than 2.7 million in its built-up area that encompasses Talgar, Boraldai, Otegen Batyr and many other suburbs. It served as capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic and later independent Kazakhstan from 1929 to 1997. In 1997, the government relocated the capital to Akmola in the north of the country.
Football Club Kairat is a professional football club based in Almaty, which plays in the Kazakhstan Premier League, the highest level of Kazakh football. Founded in 1954 as Lokomotiv Alma-Ata, they became Urozhay in 1955 and Kairat in 1956. The club's home ground is the Central Stadium which has a capacity of 23,804. The club's home kit colours are yellow and black striped shirts, black shorts and black socks.

The Jeltoksan, also spelled Zheltoksan or "December" of 1986 were protests that took place in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, in response to General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev's dismissal of Dinmukhamed Kunaev, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan and an ethnic Kazakh, and his appointment of Gennady Kolbin, an outsider from the Russian SFSR. Some sources cite Kolbin's ethnicity as Russian, others as Chuvash.
AFC Kairat is a futsal club based in Almaty, the biggest city of Kazakhstan. The club was founded in 1995. Since 2012 the club has been one of the strongest teams in Europe, having reached UEFA Futsal Cup semi-finals four times and winning it in 2012–13 and 2014–15 seasons.
The Kazakhstan Super Cup is a one-match football annual competition. The two participating clubs are the Kazakhstan Premier League champion and the Kazakhstan Cup winner. If these two competitions are won by the same team, then the other participant will be the runner-up of Kazakhstan Premier League.
The Kazakhstan Cup 2008 was the 62nd edition overall and 17th since independence of the Kazakh national football cup. The competition started on April 9, 2008 and finished with the Final played on November 16, 2008. The winners of the Cup earned a place in second qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League 2009–10.
Hossein Tayyebi Bidgoli is an Iranian professional futsal player who plays for Portuguese club Benfica and the Iran national team, having played 130 matches and scored 150 goals for the latter. His first match with Iran was in 2009 at the age of 20. He was ranked Top Goalscorer at the 2014 (15) and 2018 AFC Futsal Championship (14), and 5th Best Player in the World at the UMBRO Futsal Awards in 2017 and 2018.
The 2016 AFC Futsal Championship qualification was a men's futsal competition which decided the participating teams of the 2016 AFC Futsal Championship. A total of 16 teams qualified to play in the final tournament, including Japan, Iran, Uzbekistan (hosts), who qualified directly as the top three finishers of the 2014 AFC Futsal Championship. Since third-placed Uzbekistan qualified automatically as hosts, Kuwait, who finished fourth, would have also qualified as the next best-ranked team, but they were later replaced due to FIFA's suspension of the Kuwait Football Association.
Ayat Rudny Mini-Football Club is a futsal club based in Rudny, a city of Kostanay Province. The club was founded in 1985 and its pavilion is the Gornyak Sportcomplex with capacity of 1,500 seated spectators.
As of 2020, no operational high-speed rail systems exist in Kazakhstan. Two links are planned – between Almaty and Nur-Sultan, and an international link between Moscow and Beijing that would go through the country.

Tulpar Karaganda Mini-Football Club is a futsal club based in Astana. The club was founded in 2001 and its pavilion is the Tulpar Sportcomplex with capacity of 400 seated spectators.
The 2016–17 UEFA Futsal Cup was the 31st edition of Europe's premier club futsal tournament. This was the 16th edition under the current UEFA Futsal Cup format organized by UEFA.

The final tournament took place at the Almaty Arena in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 26–28 April 2019.

The 2019 AFC Futsal Club Championship was the 10th edition of the AFC Futsal Club Championship, an annual international futsal club tournament in Asia organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It was held in Bangkok, Thailand between 7–17 August 2019.
