The 2016–17 Maio Island League season was the 26th of the competition of the football competition in the island of Maio, Cape Verde and the second of the second and third tier football competitions. [1] Its started on January 14 and finished on April 23, 2017. The tournament was organized by the Maio Regional Football Association (Associação Regional do Maio de Futebol, ARMF). [2] All matches were played at Estádio 20 de Janeiro. Onze Unidos won their 10th title and finished with 25 points. Onze Unidos also qualified for both the regional Super Cup and the second Champion's Cup. Not one of the original seven, Real Marítimo was the second club to be relegated and the first of the clubs registered after 2009 to do so.

Association football team field sport

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. Maio is the easternmost of the Sotavento islands of Cape Verde. Maio is located south of the island of Boa Vista and east of Santiago. Administratively, the island forms one concelho (municipality): Maio.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Académico 83 was once again the defending team of the title. Again, a total of 7 clubs participated in the competition and still each club had a bye week per round. Barreirense and Beira-Mar returned to the competition in the season. [3] It was the second season that the Second Division was added and five new clubs came to that division including Beira-Mar, Cruzeiro, Figueirense and Miramar, it also featured a new club Santa Clara from Alcatraz-Pilão Cao would compete in the regionals for the first time, the first of five listed Beira-Mar withdrew and did not participate due to financial and material reasons and reduced it to four and each club challenged three times. Beira-Mar was also the first ever club to be relegated last season. In the following season, a promotional match will be added, it will feature second placed Santana and second placed Cruzeiro. Miramar won the Second Division title and will become the ninth club to compete in the following season of the Premier Division.

The Second Division started a day before the Premier Division on January 13 and finished on March 18.

Overview

A total of 106 goals were scored, around one fifth less than the previous season. It was the next season that not a single match of a round was rescheduled to another date.

The biggest win was Onze Unidos who defeated last placed Real Marítimo on April 18, two rounds before the end of the season and was their biggest home win. Académico 83's 2-4 score over Santana was the biggest match away.

Académico 83 who defeated Barreirense 1-7 on May 7 in the 14th and final round of the season. The biggest home win was Académica Calheta do Maio who defeated Santana 6-0 on January 31 in the third round. Barreirense conceded 36 goals.

Onze Unidos took the number one spot almost the whole season, Académica Calheta had it at the 5th round in February

Onze Unidos scored the most number of goals of the season numbering 23, second was Barreirense with 19, third was 17 shared with three clubs, Académico 83, Académica da Calheta and Morrerense. The least was nine goals shared by Santana and Real Marítimo. On the opposites, Onze Unidos conceded the least with six, second was Académico 83 with nine. The second most goals conceded was Santana with 21 and Real Marítimo with 32.

There were no competitions in the first week of March due to the regional cup competitions. Other regional cup competitions took place within the regional championships, the final match is after the end of the regional championships.

Clube Desportivo Onze Unidos is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Maio Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the island of Maio Island. Barreirense Futebol Clube is a sports club in Maio Island, Cape Verde based in the village of Barreiro in the south of the island and mainly plays in the stadium in the southeast of Cidade do Maio. Associação Académico 83 do Porto Inglês is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Maio Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Porto Inglês, island of Maio. Its current president is Edvaldo Soares and its coach is Nando. Since the implementation of the Second Division in 2015, Académico 83 are now the five unrelegated clubs of the island.

The 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 36th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 9 May and finished on 11 July. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The schedule including its matches were created on Saturday January 10. CS Mindelense won the eleventh title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win three in a row. Neither clubs participated in the CAF Champions League competition in 2016 and in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup. This was the second ever and most recent finals competition that two clubs came from the same island as well as the same city.

The Maio Super Cup is a regional super cup competition played during the season in Maio Island, Cape Verde. The competition is organized by the Maio Regional Football Association. Its current champions is Académico 83 do Porto Inglês. The regional champion competes with the cup champion. If a champion also has a cup title, a cup club who is runner-up qualifies. It started on 13 May and finished on 27 August, it started a days later than last season. Originally to finish on 15 July, instead, it was rescheduled to 27 August. Its started on December 16, 2017 and finished on April 1, 2018. The championships were organized by the Maio Regional Football Association. All matches were played at Estádio 20 de Janeiro. Barreirense FC won their third title and finished with a club record of 34 points. Barreirense will qualify for both the regional Super Cup and the second Champion's Cup at the end of the season. After Beira-Mar, Santana de Morrinho is recent of the original seven that will be relegated to the Second Division next season as they finished last place, they did not even played their final match of the season.

The 2009 Cape Verdean Cup season was the 3rd competition of the regional football cup in Cape Verde. The season started on 20 July and finished with the cup final on 2 August. The cup competition was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. Group A matches took place at Estádio Adérito Sena in Mindelo, São Vicente and Group B matches took place at Estádio Marcelo Leitão in Espargos. The final stage containing two semifinal matches and a final were played at Estádio da Várzea. Boavista Praia won their first of two cup title.
