The 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championship final was the final of the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships, which was the 37th edition of the Cape Verdean Football Championships and 31st with the knockout stage. [1]

The 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 38th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. It started on 13 May and finished on 27 August, it started a days later than last season. Originally to finish on 15 July, instead, it was rescheduled to 27 August. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation.

The Cape Verdean Football Championship or the Campeonato Caboverdiano de Futebol is a football competition that was created in 1976 in Cape Verde. A local championship was founded in 1953 before independence, when the islands were still part of the Portuguese Empire.

RTC (Cape Verde)

The Radiotelevisão Caboverdiana is Cape Verde's first radio and television station broadcasting local programs from Cape Verde, Portugal and Brazil as well as the rest of the world especially France. It is a publicly owned company and enterprise and is located in the Capeverdean capital city of Praia, in the southern part in the middle of Achada Santo António RTC also has a few buildings, it also has offices in São Vicente, Sal, São Filipe on Fogo Island and Assomada in Santa Catarina. The building size is very small, only like local affiliates in North America as well as Latin America, Australia and Europe. The radio building is in the south on Rua 13 de Janeiro and the television station is in the north. Its current president is José Emanuel Tavares Moreira/

The final was the next in three years that came from each island group, it featured FC Ultramarina from Tarrafal de São Nicolau (of Barlavento) and Sporting Praia, a club of Southern Santiago (of Sotavento). The winner is likely compete at the 2018 CAF Champions League in the following season.

Futebol Clube de Ultramarina is a football (soccer) club that plays in the São Nicolau Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Tarrafal in the island of São Nicolau. The team has only reached a few of the final games before and after independence.

Sporting Clube da Praia

Sporting Clube da Praia, short form: Sporting Praia is a professional football club that plays in the Santiago South Premier Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the capital city of Praia in the island of Santiago, one of the unrelegated clubs in the south of the island along with three of the city's four historically mightiest clubs including Académica, Boavista and CD Travadores. Along with Académcia, Boavista, Desportivo, Travadores and Vitória, it is one of several teams that share the same ground, Estádio da Várzea, which has a capacity of 8,000. Sporting has won six championships since independence and a few before independence. The first title was won in the summer of 1962 before independence. Sporting recently won the 2017 national title. Its current president is Carlos Daniel Caetano and its manager is Lito, who once played for Portuguese clubs as footballer.

The 2018 CAF Champions League was the 54th edition of Africa's premier club football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the 22nd edition under the current CAF Champions League title.

The 2017 football championship final was Mindelense's was their fourteenth and recent appearance in their 97 year history and also their fourth consecutive and Académica do Porto Novo was their second appearance in their 32 year history.

Académica do Porto Novo

Associação Académica do Porto Novo is a multi-sport club that plays in the Santo Antão Island League South Zone in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Porto Novo in the southeastern part of the island of Santo Antão. Sporting activities includes football and volleyball. Its current head is Osvaldinho Silva Lopes and its coach is Gunga. The nickname of the club like many other Académicas is Mica.

Unlike the 2008 season which ended the finals in an away goals rule, the 2016 final was the second straight that the finals ended in both extra time and with a penalty shootout and the first with two legs, this was the only time it ever happened in Cape Verde.

Background

At group stage, FC Ultramarina competed in Group A while Sporting Praia competed in Group C, the first participant of each of the three groups.

Sporting Praia had reached the national championship final 14 times, 12 with the playoff stage winning eight of nine. The last time they won a champion title was last season in 2012. Ultramarina Tarrafal reached the national championship final in 2003 and never won a title.

Sporting Praia won their 10th and recent national football championship title, it now has two behind Mindelense's totals. [1]

    Estádio Orlando Rodrigues

    Estádio Orlando Rodrigues is a multi-use stadium in Tarrafal de São Nicolau on the island of São Nicolau, Cape Verde and are one of two on the island. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of FC Ultramarina and AJAT'SN, clubs from other parts of the municipality plays at the stadium, the only one being FC Praia Branca from the north of the municipality. The stadium holds 5,000 people and its ground is artificial grass with its size being 106 x 68 metres. The stadium is operated by the São Nicolau Regional Football Association (ARFSN).

    The 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championship final was the final of the 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championships, which was the 36th edition of the Cape Verdean Football Championships and 29th with the knockout stage.
