The 2016-17 Sal Island League season was the competition of the second and third tier football in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. The season started on 14 January [1] and finished on 30 April 2016. The competition was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Sal, ARFS). [2] Académico do Aeroporto won their 14th title and participated at the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships and participated in Group A. Its matches were played at Estádio Marcelo Leitão.

Association football team field sport

Sal is an island in Cape Verde. It belongs to the northern group of islands, called Barlavento ("windwards"), and comprises a single administrative division, the municipality of Sal. Its seat is the city of Espargos.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).

Overview

Again, Académico do Aeroporto was the defending team of the title. It was the second season that the Premier Division featured eight clubs and 14 matches each club with a total of 48 matches, only Juventude Sal achieved the record number of points with 29, since the transition from 2 to 3 points for a win min the 1990s. The number of goals were 156, fewer than last season and an average of 3.25 per match.

Académico do Aeroporto

Académico do Aeroporto is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal. The team was is named after its nearby airport. Its current director is Ivan Lopes since mid-February 2017, its chairman is Carlos Moniz who returned for the second time and its manager was Lúcio Antunes since 2015. Now that Verdun Pedra de Lume was relegated, the club became the island's five unrelegated original clubs.

Second placed Santa Maria scored the number of goals numbering 40, second was Juventude Sal with 30 and third was Académico do Aeroporto with 29, Verdun Pedra de Lume scored the least number of goals numbering fie. The biggest home win was Santa Maria who scored 1-10 over Gaviões at the final round, the highest in some seasons.

Florença was Sal's seventh club to spend their second season in the second tier competition and the first in the Premier Division. Gaviões became the eighth and recent club to compete at the second tier competition and third in the regional Premier Division.

Verdun Pedra de Lume became the second club to be relegated and the first club of the original six.

The Second Division started later on March 24 and finished on May 27. ASGUI won the Second Division title and will return to compete in the Premier Division for the second time, it is the first that no new participant will be made.

Earlier in the season, a plan for two additional clubs were made, only one would be added, GDRC Pretória would compete for the first time after being registered, it became the only club in the nation who did not compete in the regional opening tournament and cup competition for the season, the club finished second place. Another club would be added into the Second Division for the following season and was Oásis Atlântico of Praia de Santa Maria in the west of that city.

Estádio Marcelo Leitão

Estádio Marcelo Leitão is a multi-use stadium in Sal Island, Cape Verde. It is used mostly for football matches and now track and field and has a capacity of 8,000 people. It is named for Marcelo Leitão, one of the two main features on the island, the other is a square located in Santa Maria. The stadium is owned by the municipality of Sal and still does as the municipality has yet to split into two. The stadium are operated by the Sal Regional Football (Soccer) and Athletic associations. It is the home stadium of Espargos teams, Académico do Aeroporto and others based in a neighborhood Juventude and recently Chã de Matias, Gaviões, Jovens Unidos of Ribeira Funda and Pretória, it is also home to the island's club Académica do Sal. The ground is made of artificial grass, its area is 105 x 68 meters. Its location is south of the road connecting the east of the city with the road encircling most of the city. The stadium also had recently constructed parking lots.

FC Juventude (Sal)

Futebol Clube Juventude is a football (soccer) club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the subdivision of Morro de Cural in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal. Juventude is the fifth successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 7 official regional titles. As of the 2016-17 season, its chairman is David Brito and its coach is Djulhiano Santos.

GD Palmeira

Grupo Desportivo Palmeira is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Santa Maria and plays in its municipal stadium north of the town center. Palmeira is the fourth successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 8 official regional titles.

The Sal Premier Division is a regional championship played in Sal Island, Cape Verde. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. The competition are organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. The Premier Divisions contains eight clubs. In title history, Académico do Aeroporto has the most number of titles numbering 14, and is ranked fifth in the most number of championship titles of any of the island leagues in Cape Verde. Its current chairman is Alcindo Conceição Silva and its current manager is Domingo Gomes who replaced Djulhiano Santos which he now manages Juventude.

The tournament was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. Sport Clube Verdun won their second and recent title and qualified into the 2014 Cape Verdean Football Championships, their next in more than thirty years and the first in Group Stage. SC Verdun of Pedra de Lume won their second and recent title and finished with 20 points, a point difference from Académico do Aeroporto. Its matches were predominantly both played in Estádio Marcelo Leitão and Santa Maria's municipal stadium, in the following season.

Sports in Sal, Cape Verde

The island of Sal in Cape Verde in the east of the Barlavento Islands is home to several teams and clubs. The football competition was the third along with Fogo to have its own first held in 1976 after the nation's independence. Since 2014, the football (soccer) was the only competition divided into two divisions.

The 2017 Sal Opening Tournament season was the competition of the Opening Tournament or the Association Cup of football in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. All of the competition took place in late 2017, the Premier Division of the cup started on October 22 and finished on November 11 and the Second Division started on November 10, then it took a three-week hiatus before resuming on December 1, it finished on December 15. The tournament was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. SC Santa Maria won their second title for the season.

The 2017-18 Sal Island Cup season is the current competition of the regional football cup in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. The season started on November 16 and ended on March 31. The cup competition is organized by the Sal Regional Football Association. SC Santa Maria won their only title and became the second club from the city to win a cup title, also it was the sixth from the island and became the last of the original six to have a cup title or more. All the matches are being played at Estádio Marcelo Leitão.
