The 2017 Sal Opening Tournament season was the competition of the Opening Tournament or the Association Cup (equivalent to a League Cup used in other countries, e.g. nearby Senegal) of football in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. All of the competition took place in late 2017, the Premier Division of the cup started on October 22 and finished on November 11 and the Second Division started on November 10, then it took a three-week hiatus before resuming on December 1, it finished on December 15. The tournament was organized by the Sal Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol do Sal, ARFS). [1] [2] SC Santa Maria won their second title for the season.

Sal is an island in Cape Verde. It belongs to the northern group of islands, called Barlavento ("windwards"), and comprises a single administrative division, the municipality of Sal. Its seat is the city of Espargos.
Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).
SC Santa Maria was the defending team of the title. A total of eight clubs competed in two groups, A and B in the competition and challenged with a different club once in its three rounds. All of the clubs are also that will participate in its regional Premier Division later in December 2017. In the Premier Division, Group A consisted Santa Maria, Florença Santa Maria, Gaviões and ASGUI and Group B consisted of Académico do Aeroporto, Juventude, Palmeira de Santa Maria and Académica do Sal. The club finished first in each group qualifies into the final.
Sport Clube Santa Maria is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Santa Maria in the southern part of the island of Sal. Santa Maria is the third successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 10 official regional titles.
In the Premier Division, Santa Maria scored the most goals numbering 8, second was Juventude. A total of goals were scored.
In its Second Division, SC Verdun won the title for the season.
Sport Club Verdun is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. The team is based in the village of Pedra de Lume in the east of the island of Sal, though they play in Espargos' stadium, the home field which is made up of dirt is rarely used for practices. Its current chairman is Alcindo Conceição Silva and its current manager is Domingo Gomes who replaced Djulhiano Santos which he now manages Juventude.

Académico do Aeroporto is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal. The team was is named after its nearby airport. Its current director is Ivan Lopes since mid-February 2017, its chairman is Carlos Moniz who returned for the second time and its manager was Lúcio Antunes since 2015. Now that Verdun Pedra de Lume was relegated, the club became the island's five unrelegated original clubs. Grupo Desportivo Palmeira is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Santa Maria and plays in its municipal stadium north of the town center. Palmeira is the fourth successful football (soccer) club on the island, having won 8 official regional titles. Associação Académica do Sal is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal and its location is on Palmeira Road next to the city library. It is one of many teams that only won one title since independence.
