The football rivalry between FC Ultramarina and SC Atlético is a rivalry in the island of São Nicolau, Cape Verde. The rivalry is matched by the more intense rivalry between SC Atlético and their cross town rival Desportivo Ribeira Brava on the island. [1]

Association football team field sport

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played with a spherical ball between two teams of eleven players. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.

Futebol Clube de Ultramarina is a football (soccer) club that plays in the São Nicolau Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Tarrafal in the island of São Nicolau. The team has only reached a few of the final games before and after independence.

Sport Club Atlético is a football (soccer) club based in Ribeira Brava and plays in São Nicolau Island League and had played in the Premier division in Cape Verde. Its current head is Artemiza Ramos and its coach is Pirico who is since January 2017. Also its honorary president is António Manuel Santos. Its nickname is Encarnados, the same nickname of Portugal's SL Benfica.

History

The rivalry began around in the 1990s when the regional championshups started. There have been over 60 meetings between the clubs and approximately 70 with the cup and super cup competitions.

Ultramarina's last win was on March 26, 2016, Atlético's recent wins was January 17 [2] and March 26, 2016. Their recent match that took place on January 21, 2018 ended in a two goal draw.

Cultural rivalry

SC Atlético is an affiliate of SL Benfica of Lisbon, Portugal. That club was founded in 1977, one of several clubs affiliated to a Portuguese club that were founded after independence.

Football rivalry

The rivalry is one of the newest ahead of the former Sporting Porto Novo-Paulense rivalry and the current Académica-Sporting rivalry of Porto Novo on Santo Antão.

Ultramarina is one of the most successful football (sooccer) club on the island, having won about 18 official regional titles compared to Atlético's 14 official regional titles. Neither clubs have competed in the African competitions as Atlético was disqualfiied in 1995 as the football federation did not name an entrant in time into the 1995 CAF Cup.

The 1995 CAF Cup was the fourth football club tournament season that took place for the runners-up of each African country's domestic league. It was won by ES Sahel in two-legged final victory against AS Kaloum Star.
