The 2014 Cape Verdean Football Championship final was the final of the 2014 Cape Verdean Football Championships, which was the 35th edition of the Cape Verdean Football Championships and 28th with the knockout stage. [1] It was the final time the championship final was played in May due to that a few days later in June, viewers tuned to the 2014 World Cup which took place in Brazil.

The 2014 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 35th of the competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 5 April and finished on 31 May, earlier than the previous year as some days later, television viewers would later tune to the 2014 World Cup which took place in Brazil. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. CS Mindelense won the tenth title and their second in a row, its total number of titles superseded Sporting Praia's totals by one. They did not participate in the 2015 CAF Champions League.

The Cape Verdean Football Championship or the Campeonato Caboverdiano de Futebol is a football competition that was created in 1976 in Cape Verde. A local championship was founded in 1953 before independence, when the islands were still part of the Portuguese Empire.

RTC (Cape Verde)

The Radiotelevisão Caboverdiana is Cape Verde's first radio and television station broadcasting local programs from Cape Verde, Portugal and Brazil as well as the rest of the world especially France. It is a publicly owned company and enterprise and is located in the Capeverdean capital city of Praia, in the southern part in the middle of Achada Santo António RTC also has a few buildings, it also has offices in São Vicente, Sal, São Filipe on Fogo Island and Assomada in Santa Catarina. The building size is very small, only like local affiliates in North America as well as Latin America, Australia and Europe. The radio building is in the south on Rua 13 de Janeiro and the television station is in the north. Its current president is José Emanuel Tavares Moreira/

The final was played between CS Mindelense from São Vicente and Académica of Fogo. The winners did not compete into the Cape Verdean Super Cup and the 2015 CAF Champions League in the following season, primarily due to its schedule, a part of it, the regional championship and cup competitions within it.

CS Mindelense

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: KS Mindelensi, São Vicente Crioulo: KS Mindelense is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. Mindelense is the oldest club in Cape Verde. It is the team won the most cups before and after independence especially in the 1950s and the 1970s with nine titles before independence and eleven after independence. Their first participation in the national division before independence was unofficially in 1938 and officially in 1954, Mindelense first appeared after independence in 1980. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Derby. Its current chairman is Daniel de Jesus. The club's nickname is Leões Encarnados or the Incarnated Lions. A nickname that is used less often is the Red Devils or the Diablos Vermelhos.

Académica do Fogo

Associação Académica do Fogo is a football club that currently plays in the Campeonato Nacional de Cabo Verde and in the Fogo Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the island of Fogo and plays in the stadium with a capacity of 1000. The logo and the uniform as well as other teams with the name Académica and Académico in Cape Verde is identical to Académica de Coimbra, it features the volcanic mountain on the right. The club name and the year of foundation are at the bottom. Académica do Fogo are one of the unrelegated clubs on the island which includes Vulcânicos and Botafogo.

The 2015 CAF Champions League was the 51st edition of Africa's premier club football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the 19th edition under the current CAF Champions League format. The winner qualified for the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup, and earned the right to play in the 2016 CAF Super Cup.

The 2014 football championship final was Mindelense's was their twelfth appearance in their 95 year history and also their second consecutive and Académica do Fogo's first and only appearance in their 52 years of existence. The other club was the third and last from Fogo who appeared at the national championship final.

Background

At group stage, both were participants of Group B, they qualified into the semis and placed in different parts, the two advanced to the finals.

CS Mindelense had reached the national championship final twelve times, winning nine of them. The last time they won a championship title was last season in 2013 where they defeated Académica do Porto Novo with a total of 5 goals to 2 in two of its matches.

Académica do Porto Novo

Associação Académica do Porto Novo is a multi-sport club that plays in the Santo Antão Island League South Zone in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Porto Novo in the southeastern part of the island of Santo Antão. Sporting activities includes football and volleyball. Its current head is Osvaldinho Silva Lopes and its coach is Gunga. The nickname of the club like many other Académicas is Mica.

Académica do Fogo had never competed in a national championship final match.

Mindelense won their 10th national football championship title and was also their second consecutive, its total number of titles superseded Sporting Praia's totals by one. [2] Mindelense qualified into the 2014 national super cup, and later the national championships in the following season.

The 2014 Cape Verdean Super Cup was an annual and a single knockout match featuring the winner of the 2013 championship CS Mindelense and instead of a cup winner as no cup competition was held in 2013, a super cup winner of 2013, Sporting Praia. The Super Cup featured the national rivalry between Mindelense and Sporting.

Football is the most popular sport in Cape Verde. The league is divided into eleven divisions, of which seven of them are singles and two islands, Santiago and Santo Antão has two zones since 2000. The scheduling was completed on November 16 and the group system was kept insteading of becoming a one portion season without playoffs and was the last time. CS Mindelense won the record breaking title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win four in a row, the highest ever, also it was Mindelense's last. Mindelense chose to not participate in the CAF Champions League competition in 2017, Académica do Porto Novo did not participate in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, both of the clubs due to financial concerns, of any club, it is the eighth consecutive time and becomes the recent African nation not to bring a champion to the continentals for the most consecutive years, in the cup competition, Cape Verde is the longest for not bringing a club in Africa lasting for more than 15 years straight, not even the three national cup winners competed. Mindelense qualfiied and participated in the 2017 National Championships.

Also it was another season that it was sponsored by a clothing company Tecnicil, it was also known as the 2018 Cape Verdean Tecnicil football season or the 2018 Tecnicil Football Championships. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The season began earlier started on 7 April 2018 and finished on 2 June.
