The football rivalry between Mindelense and Derby is considered the hugest rivalry in the island of São Vicente and one of the largest in Cape Verde. It is the largest rivalries in the nation and the region and is also the longest rivalry. It is one of three known as the Mindelo Derby (Derby do Mindelo) or the São Vicente derby (Derby de São Vicente). [1]

The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.

CS Mindelense

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: KS Mindelensi, São Vicente Crioulo: KS Mindelense is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. Mindelense is the oldest club in Cape Verde. It is the team won the most cups before and after independence especially in the 1950s and the 1970s with nine titles before independence and eleven after independence. Their first participation in the national division before independence was unofficially in 1938 and officially in 1954, Mindelense first appeared after independence in 1980. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Derby. Its current chairman is Daniel de Jesus. The club's nickname is Leões Encarnados or the Incarnated Lions. A nickname that is used less often is the Red Devils or the Diablos Vermelhos.

FC Derby association football club

Futebol Clube Derby is a football club that had played in the Premier division and the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde and is Cape Verde's only affiliate of FC Porto and the oldest affiliate in the whole of Africa. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. It is the second team of the regional league who won the most titles after independence especially in the 1960s and the 1970s. Its current president is Carlos Alberto Lopes and its coach is Yoya who became in May 2017. The club name is the Dragons or Dragões, the same as Porto's slogan. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Mindelense.

History

Since its creation of the regional championships in 1938, there had been around 110 matches that featured Mindelense and Derby, there were also over 130 matches with the cup competitions.

In 2008, the rivalry was featured in the São Vicente Super Cup, the match was never played as Derby forfeited and Mindelense was awarded 3-0 and won their second title.

The São Vicente Super Cup is a regional SuperCup competition played during the season in São Vicente Island, Cape Verde. The super cup competition is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. Its current champions is FC Derby who won their second title The regional champion competes with the cup champion. The 2015 edition was held, as Mindelense won both the regional and cup titles, the regional winner competed with a runner up in the regional cup.

At the 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championships, it was the only time that the rivalry was taken to the national level. At the 2015 finals, the first match ended in a goal draw on July 4 and as another match on July 11 was a draw, Mindelense won 3-4 in penalty kicks and claimed their 10th and also their third consecutive national title.

The 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 36th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. Its started on 9 May and finished on 11 July. The tournament was organized by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The schedule including its matches were created on Saturday January 10. CS Mindelense won the eleventh title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win three in a row. Neither clubs participated in the CAF Champions League competition in 2016 and in the 2016 CAF Confederation Cup. This was the second ever and most recent finals competition that two clubs came from the same island as well as the same city.

Cultural rivalry

The rivalry are similar to one of the rivalries in other parts of Cape Verde, for example, the Sporting-Travadores and Sporting-Boa Vista, both clubs are an affiliate of a Portuguese club. Neither Mindelense nor Derby are affiliates of a Portuguese club.

Football rivalry

The rivalry is the longest in Cape Verde.

Mindelense the most successful football (sooccer) club in Cape Verde, [2] having won about 83 official titles (12 national and 71 regional) compared to Derby' 21 official titles (3 national and 18 regional). On the other hand, Mindelense boast of their better goal scoring in African competitions (no Capeverdean team has ever won an African title) where they scored two goals, Mindelense first appeared in the 1993 African Cup of Champion's Clubs. While Derby appeared in the 2001 CAF Champions League and never scored a goal there. Both club's competed only in the participation in the Preliminary Round.

The CAF Champions League 2001 was won by Al Ahly over Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 2017 São Vicente Cup final had this rivalry featured as both clubs competed, Derby won the match and the recent cup.
