The 2016–17 São Vicente Island League season was the 85th (41st since independence) of the competition of the second and third tiers of football in the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. It started on 17 December 2016 and finished on 30 April 2017. The championship was organized and governed by the São Vicente Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de São Vicente de Futebol, ARSVF). [1] CS Mindelense won the 49th title, as they were national champions in the previous season, once again Derby as second place qualified into the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships, two weeks later in May. Mindelense qualified into the regional Super Cup as champion later in the year and faced the cup winner Derby.

Overview

CS Mindelense was again the defending team of the title. A total of 14 clubs participated in the competition, 8 in the Premier Division and 6 in the Second Division. In the Premier Division, a total of 132 goals were scored, around twenty fewer than in 2015 and two last season.

CS Mindelense

Clube Sportivo Mindelense (Capeverdean Crioulo, ALUPEC or ALUPEK: KS Mindelensi, São Vicente Crioulo: KS Mindelense is a football club that plays in the Premier division of the Interisland League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo in the island of São Vicente. Mindelense is the oldest club in Cape Verde. It is the team won the most cups before and after independence especially in the 1950s and the 1970s with nine titles before independence and eleven after independence. Their first participation in the national division before independence was unofficially in 1938 and officially in 1954, Mindelense first appeared after independence in 1980. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Batuque and Derby. Its current chairman is Daniel de Jesus. The club's nickname is Leões Encarnados or the Incarnated Lions. A nickname that is used less often is the Red Devils or the Diablos Vermelhos.

Mindelense finished with 32 points, the club did not lose a single match. [2] Mindelense scored the most numbering 27, second was Derby and third was Farense Fonte Filipe, the least was Salamansa with 10 and Ribeira Bote with 14. On the opposites, Mindelense conceded the fewest with 9 goals, second was Ribeira Bote with 14 while Salamansa conceded the most with 23 and second was Falcões do Norte with 22.

GS Castilho was promoted into the Regional Premier Division after participating for three seasons and failed to return after losing promotional matches in two seasons, Falcões do Norte was relegated and participated in the regional Second Division in the following season. Salamansa went into 7th place and challenged runner up in the Second Division, Ponta d'Pom in the promotional match. The first match ended in a goal draw, Salamansa won 1-0 in the second match and Salamansa stayed in the Premier Division in the following season.

Académica Mindelo started with first place, it was taken by Farense, Mindelense took it for the rest of the season. Académica Mindelo's position fallen to fifth at the 13th round and that club finished 3rd for the season while Derby was runner up for the season.

Académica Mindelo was thought to be first place up to the 13th round (originally with 29 points), in April, Derby made a protest that the club was using a goalkeeper with a fake identity. On April 24, the Disciplinary Council of the Cape Verdean Football Federation, removed every points that the fake goalkeeper had played totalling 11 and included one with Salamansa, Derby, Farense, the almighty Mindelense and Ribeira Bote, from February 25, they were the first three matches and the last two matches on April 15. [3] Their positions were dropped from first to fifth and also, their National qualification was lost.[ citation needed ]. The club did not used the fake goalkeeper in an April 1 match over Falcões do Norte.[ citation needed ], all this will remove the coach from the club and formed the club's part of some match fixing. The second place position was replaced by FC Derby, earlier positions were also changed, the club was actually third, then fifth and their points was 18. [3]

Cape Verdean Football Federation

The Cape Verdean Football Federation is the governing body of football in Cape Verde. It was founded in 1982, affiliated to FIFA in 1986 and to CAF in 2000. It organizes the national football league and the national team.

Futebol Clube Derby is a football club that had played in the Premier division and the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde and is Cape Verde's only affiliate of FC Porto and the oldest affiliate in the whole of Africa. It is one of the first teams ever to win a provincial title before independence, in 1953, a year later. There was no further competition until 1956. Académica won their first title since independence in 1989. Other titles includes four for the island including their recent 2006/07 season win and two opening tournaments along with their recent win.

Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena

Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena is a multi-use stadium in Mindelo, Cape Verde. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of FC Derby as well as CS Mindelense, Académica, GD Amarantes and Batuque FC and the lesser club of Corinthians São Vicente. The stadium holds 5,000 people and area is 105x68 m and its ground is artificial grass. The stadium is owned by the municipality of São Vicente and is operated by the São Vicente Regional Football Association (ARFSV). It is a certified stadium by FIFA for international competition as well as friendly matches

The Cape Verdean Football Championship or the Campeonato Caboverdiano de Futebol is a football competition that was created in 1976 in Cape Verde. A local championship was founded in 1953 before independence, when the islands were still part of the Portuguese Empire.

The São Vicente Island or Regional Premier Division is a regional championship played in São Vicente Island, Cape Verde. The championship is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. In 1989, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017, a second place club participated in the national championships, Académica do Mindelo in 1989, Mindelense in 2014 and FC Derby in 2015 and in 2016 and will be for 2017. The 7th place club plays with a Second Division runner-up in a division decisional match to decide on promoting or remain in the Second Division. Batuque Futebol Clube is a football club that plays in the São Vicente Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente. Its current president is Jota who became first president in around the mid 2000s. Its nickname is Panteras (Panthers) which is also Portugal's Boavista F.C. nickname, the club is not an affilaite to that club. Since 30 April 2017, they are one of three unrelegated clubs in the island along with Derby and Mindelense.

The super cup competition is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. The competition is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. Until 2009, it featured 9 rounds and the club met once. When the second division was introduced to the São Vicente Island League in 2009, the Opening Tournament became the Association Cup and featured two divisions. It currently consists of seven rounds, a meeting with another club once. The winner with the most points is the winner.
