The eight team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The West Virginia Mountaineers claimed their third Big 12 tournament title after defeating the TCU Horned Frogs in overtime in the championship match

The Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated the Kansas Jayhawks in the championship match to win their first conference tournament.

The West Virginia Mountaineers were the defending champions, but they were eliminated from the 2017 tournament by virtue of losing the penalty shoot-out tiebreaking procedure following a tie with the TCU Horned Frogs in the semifinals. The Baylor Bears won the title, defeating TCU 2–1 in overtime in the final. This was the second Big 12 tournament title for the Baylor women's soccer program and first for head coach Paul Jobson.

The 7-match tournament was held at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas. The 8-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The Kansas Jayhawks were the defending champions from 2019. There was no tournament held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kansas was unable to defend its title as the team did not qualify for the tournament. TCU won the title by defeating Texas 2–1 in the final. This was the first title in school history for TCU and head coach Eric Bell. As tournament champions, TCU earned the Big 12's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

The conference announced the 11-match tournament would be held at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri for the 2024 and 2025 season. It also would expand to twelve teams with the addition of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.
