The Patriot League is a collegiate athletic conference comprising private institutions of higher education and two United States service academies based in the Northeastern United States. Except for the Ivy League, it is the most selective group of higher education institutions in NCAA Division I, and has a very high student-athlete graduation rate for both the NCAA graduation success rate and the federal graduation rate.
The Patriot League men's basketball tournament is held at the conclusion of each regular season. The winner of the tournament is awarded an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship.
The Lafayette Leopards represent the 23 Division I varsity athletic teams of Lafayette College and compete in the Patriot League. There are 11 men's teams, 11 women's teams, and one co-ed team. The club teams also compete as the Leopards. Though not a varsity sport, crew and ice hockey are very competitive at Lafayette and play in intercollegiate club leagues.
The Bucknell Bison are the athletic teams that represent Bucknell University. The program is a member of the Patriot League for most NCAA Division I sports and Division I FCS in football.
The 2017 Patriot League men's basketball tournament was the postseason conference tournament for the Patriot League. It was played February 28, March 2, 5, and 8, 2017 with the higher seed in each matchup hosting at their respective campus sites. Bucknell defeated Lehigh, 81–65, in the championship game to win the Tournament. As a result, Bucknell received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Bucknell Bison and they successfully defended their title, defeating the Navy Midshipmen in the conference final. The conference championship was the fourth for the Bucknell women's soccer program and the second for head coach Kelly Cook.

The Bison, led by third-year head coach Nathan Davis, played their home games at Sojka Pavilion in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 25–10, 16–2 in Patriot League to win the Patriot League regular season championship. They defeated Loyola (MD), Boston University, and Colgate to win the Patriot League tournament championship. As a result, they received the Patriot League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Michigan State.
The 2018–19 Colgate Raiders men's basketball team represented Colgate University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Raiders, led by eighth-year head coach Matt Langel, played their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 24-11, 13-5 to tie for first place. In the Patriot League tournament, they defeated Boston University, Navy, and Bucknell to win the Patriot League tournament. As a result, they received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament where they lost in the first round to Tennessee.

The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Bucknell Bison, however they were unable to defend their crown, losing to Lehigh 2–1 in the first round. The tournament was won by the Boston University Terriers, who were the #1 seed and defeated Lehigh 1–0 in the final. The conference championship was the fourth for the Boston University women's soccer program, all of which have come under coach Nancy Feldman.

The Raiders, led by ninth-year head coach Matt Langel, played their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. They finished the season 25–9, 14–4 in Patriot League play to win the Patriot League regular season championship. They defeated Lehigh and Lafayette to reach the championship game of the Patriot League tournament where they lost to Boston University. As a regular season league champion who failed to win their league tournament, they received an automatic bid to the 2020 National Invitation Tournament. However, the NIT and all other postseason tournaments were cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The defending champions were the Boston University Terriers, however they were unable to defend their crown, after failing to qualify for the tournament by finishing ninth in regular season play. The tournament was won by Navy, who were the #1 seed and defeated Army 2–1 in the final. The conference championship was the fourth for the Navy women's soccer program, all of which have come under coach Carom Babarra.
The 2020–21 Colgate Raiders men's basketball team represented Colgate University in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Raiders, were led by tenth-year head coach Matt Langel, play their home games at Cotterell Court in Hamilton, New York as members of the Patriot League. With the creation of mini-divisions to cut down on travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they played in the North Division. They finished the season 14-2, 11-1 in Patriot League Play to finish as champions of the North Division. They defeated Boston University, Bucknell, and Loyola (MD) to be champions of the Patriot League tournament. They received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Arkansas.

Bucknell went on to win the tournament, defeating Boston University, who were the #1 seed, 1–0 in the final. The conference championship was the fifth for the Bucknell women's soccer program, three of which have come under head coach Kelly Cook. Bucknell successfully defended their title, defeating regular season champions Army, who were the #1 seed, in a penalty shootout in the final. As tournament champions, Bucknell earned the Patriot League's automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

The tournament was held at campus sites, with the higher seeded team hosting. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Loyola Greyhounds. They were unable to defend their crown, as they finished in seventh place during the regular season and did not qualify for the tournament. The Navy Midshipmen would go on to claim the title, defeating American in the final, 1–0. The conference championship was the second for the Navy men's soccer program, and the first for head coach Tim O'Donohue. As tournament champions, Loyola earned the Patriot League's automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.
