The 2016-17 Santo Antão Island League (South) season was the competition of the second-tier football in southern (and the western) part the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde. Its started on 12 November and finished on 26 March. The tournament was organized by the Santo Antão South Regional Football Association (Associação Regional de Futebol de Zona Sul do Santo Antão, ARFZSSA). [1] Académica do Porto Novo won the 11th title and their 12th overall and finished with 34 points and participated in the 2017 Cape Verdean Football Championships in mid May and the first with changes as it will be divided into three groups, they played with Paulense, champion of the north of the island and Mindelense in which Académica Porto Novo lost to last season at the nationals along with the title.

Santo Antão is the westernmost island of Cape Verde. At 779 km2 (301 sq mi), it is the largest of the Barlavento Islands group, and the second largest island of Cape Verde. The nearest island is São Vicente to the southeast, separated by the sea channel Canal de São Vicente. Its population was 40,547 in 2015, making it the third most populous island of Cape Verde after Santiago and São Vicente. Its largest city is Porto Novo on the south coast.
Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. It forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles. In ancient times these islands were referred to as "the Islands of the Blessed" or the "Fortunate Isles". Located 570 kilometres (350 mi) west of the Cape Verde Peninsula off the coast of Northwest Africa, the islands cover a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi).
Also Académica Porto Novo received qualification into the upcoming Santo Antão South Super Cup and the Santo Antão Super Cup later in 2017.
Académica do Porto Novo was again the defending team of the title for the sixth time. Seven clubs participated in the competition; two did not participate, Maritimo and Tarrafal FC de Monte Trigo, which would be an 18-round and a 72-match season, while Sanjoanense and Santo André returned to the competition, also they played their season's first match with each other. Associação Académica do Porto Novo is a multi-sport club that plays in the Santo Antão Island League South Zone in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Porto Novo in the southeastern part of the island of Santo Antão. Sporting activities includes football and volleyball. Its current head is Osvaldinho Silva Lopes and its coach is Gunga. The nickname of the club like many other Académicas is Mica.
A total of 158 goals were scored in the season, eight less than last season. Académica led almost for the entire season except for the second round which was led by Sanjoanenses. The highest scoring match was Académica defeating Inter 8-0 on January 21, as there were no matches ended with ten goals or more. Not a single loss was made in two seasons for Académica Porto Novo. At the end of the season, it still holds the records for an unbeaten streak at home numbering 35. Académica scored 51, fewer than last season and made it the second highest for the club and regional history, Académica won their seventh consecutive title and any of the island leagues, other clubs who won seven consecutive titles were Mindelense (1975–82) and Botafogo (1976–83). It is behind Brava's No Pintcha (1994-2001). Second in goal scoring was Sanjoanenses with 37.
Clube Desportivo Nô Pintcha is a football club in Cape Verde that plays in the Brava Island Division in Cape Verde. It is based in Cidade Nova Sintra the island of Brava.
Sporting Porto Novo got their next win in seasons, though the club conceded the most goals numbering 40. On the opposites Académica conceded the fewest with five, Santo André got not a single win but two draws, they did not played their last match of the season against Académica Porto Novo due to financial concerns and in part not to concede more goals than Sporting Porto Novo, Santo André finished last.
It was the first time that the season started in November. There were breaks in the championship competition, the first, fourth and the final weeks of December, the first and second weeks of January and the first weeks of February and March due to the subregional and regional cup competitions. Again, the championships finished before the subregional and regional cup competitions, the subregional cup competitions will finish later in April.

Sporting Clube de Porto Novo is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Santo Antão Island South Zone Division in Cape Verde. It is based in the island of Santo Antão. The club was founded in 1956 and is the island's oldest sporting club. Geographically it was once the westernmost sporting club in Cape Verde and the whole of Africa, now it is one of several today.

The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. The championship is organized by the Santo Antão South Regional Football Association. It has one of the fewest teams in the Capeverdean football or soccer ahead of Brava's and São Nicolau's. Its current head is Fernando Lima since late 2016.
Paulense Desportivo Clube is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Santo Antão Island League North Zone in Cape Verde. It is based in the town of Pombas, the seat of Paúl in the northeastern part of the island of Santo Antão and is being the main club of Vale do Paul. Its current manager is Alberto Teixeira. Its nickname is Encarnados, the same nickname of Portugal's S.L. Benfica and many other clubs affiliated to Benfica. Since the introduction of the Second Division in the 2012-13 season, the club are one of two that have never been relegated, the other is Os Foguetões.

It started on 14 December 2013 and finished on 23 March 2014. The tournament was organized by the Santo Antão South Regional Football Association. Académica do Porto Novo won the 8th title and finished with 34 points and had 11 wins, a draw, and 37 goals, and conceded only five.

Académica do Porto Novo won the 9th title, their 10th overall,and finished with 32 points.
Estádio Municipal do Porto Novo is a multi-purpose stadium in Porto Novo, Cape Verde just about 1 km west of the city center on the road connecting Porto Novo and places west of the island including Norte and Tarrafal de Monte Trigo. It is currently used mostly for football matches along with athletics. The stadium is owned by the municipality of Porto Novo and are operated by the Santo Antão South Regional Football Association (ARFSSA) and the Santo Antão Regional Athletics Association (ARASA). The stadium holds about 3,000 to 4,000 people and has seat rows in the left sides. The stadium is home to the Santo Antão Island League South Zone's clubs including Académica, Fiorentina, Marítimo, Sanjoanense and Sporting. Its size is 105 by 68 m. It is the westernmost sports stadium in the whole of Africa, it is also the westernmost athletic facility. It has one of the westernmost football fields in the whole of Africa.
The 2016 Cape Verdean Football Championship season was the 37th beginner level competition of the first-tier football in Cape Verde. It started on 14 May and finished on 9 July, it started five days later than last season and finished two days earlier, the season was a week shorter than last. The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation. The scheduling was completed on November 16 and the group system was kept insteading of becoming a one portion season without playoffs and was the last time. CS Mindelense won the record breaking title and became the second club after Sporting Praia to win four in a row, the highest ever, also it was Mindelense's last. Mindelense chose to not participate in the CAF Champions League competition in 2017, Académica do Porto Novo did not participate in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup, both of the clubs due to financial concerns, of any club, it is the eighth consecutive time and becomes the recent African nation not to bring a champion to the continentals for the most consecutive years, in the cup competition, Cape Verde is the longest for not bringing a club in Africa lasting for more than 15 years straight, not even the three national cup winners competed. Mindelense qualfiied and participated in the 2017 National Championships.

The 2016–17 CS Mindelense season were in the island and top division of Cape Verdean football. The club won the island's 49th title, a record of all the island titles won by any club in Cape Verde. As they were the 2016 national league winners, they qualified into the national championships. Mindelense will qualify to the 2017 regional super cup as champion later in the year.

The championship was governed by the Cape Verdean Football Federation.

Their reasons was in part due to financial and material. This reduced to six clubs that participated in the competition with the last being in 2010, this would be less successful for Académica than the 2016 and the 2017 seasons, but they would be more successful than the six match 2012 season. The club won their 12th title and became the next club to win eight consecutive titles of each island leagues, others are CS Mindelense of nearby São Vicente several times between the foundation up to 1994, Botafogo of Fogo in 1981 and Brava's Nô Pintcha in 1996.
