The 2017 Star Sports Greyhound Derby took place during June and July and the final was held on 1 July 2017 at Towcester Greyhound Stadium.

It was the first time since 1984 that the event was held away from Wimbledon Stadium and the first time in its history that it was held outside of London. [1] The competition was sponsored by bookmaker Star Sports for the first time with a winner's prize of £175,000. [2] The winner was Astute Missile who was the outsider at 28-1, [3] his owner Geoff Hill won £175,000. [4]

Race Report

Astute Missile broke very well from the traps alongside Hiya Butt, who produced his trademark early pace, to lead from the first bend until the third bend. Astute Missile then forced his way inside Hiya Butt at the third bend, the latter received a small bump at this stage and then tired into last place. Astute Missile went on to win from a strong finishing Tyrur Shay and the previously unbeaten Clares Rocket finished third after failing to make the fast start that was expected of him.

Towcester Racecourse

Towcester Racecourse was a horse racing course at Towcester in Northamptonshire, England. It hosted National Hunt racing race meetings in the Winter months. It is situated on the Easton Neston estate. A greyhound racing track was opened in 2014 and staged the English Greyhound Derby until 2018. The course went into administration in August 2018 and the future of horse racing and greyhound racing at the venue became uncertain.

The 2016 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 4 June 2016 at Wimbledon Stadium. Jaytee Jet won the final and the winning owner John Turner received £150,000.

The 2002 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 1 June 2002 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner received £75,000.

The 1999 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 26 June 1999 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner Chart King received £50,000 and returned to Ireland as the newly crowned English and Scottish Greyhound Derby champion.

Towcester Greyhound Stadium

Towcester Greyhound Stadium is a greyhound racing track located within Towcester Racecourse at Towcester in Northamptonshire, England. It was the home of the English Greyhound Derby from 2017-2018.

The 1982 Spillers Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 26 June 1982 at White City Stadium. The winner was Lauries Panther and the winning owner Laurie James received £25,000. The competition was sponsored by the Spillers for the final time.

The 1959 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 27 June 1959 at White City Stadium. The winner was Mile Bush Pride and the winning owner Noel Purvis received £1,500.

The 1957 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 29 June 1957 at White City Stadium. The winner was Ford Spartan and the winning owners Frank Hill and Sid Frost received £1,500. Ford Spartan was reared by Robert Bolt.

The 1932 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 25 June 1932 at White City Stadium. The winner Wild Woolley received a first prize of £1,050.

The 1940 Greyhound Derby took place during June and July with the final being held on Monday 8 July 1940 at Harringay Stadium. The winner G.R.Archduke, owned by Mr. O.G Leach, received a first prize of £1,000. The event took place at Harringay because the traditional venue of White City was closed after the first round due to the war. This Derby became known as the 'Silent Derby' due to the impending war and following the final the Derby was postponed until 1945.

The 1949 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 25 June 1949 at White City Stadium. The winner Narrogar Ann received a first prize of £1,500.

The 1951 Greyhound Derby took place during June with the final being held on 30 June 1951 at White City Stadium. The winner Ballylanigan Tanist received a first prize of £1,500.

The 2017 UK & Ireland Greyhound Racing Year was the 92nd year of greyhound racing in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

2018 English Greyhound Derby

The 2018 Star Sports Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 2 June 2018 at Towcester Greyhound Stadium. The winner Dorotas Wildcat won £175,000 and was trained by Kevin Hutton, owned by Hutton and Dave Usher and bred by Jim Gurney.

The English Greyhound Derby Invitation formerly the Derby Consolation Stakes was a long standing competition for greyhounds eliminated during the later stages of the English Greyhound Derby.

The 2019 Star Sports, ARC & LPS Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 29 June 2019 at Nottingham Greyhound Stadium.

The 2021 Star Sports Greyhound Derby will take place during June and July 2021, with the final being held on 10 July 2021 at Towcester Greyhound Stadium.
