2017 Horizon League Tournament winner

The 2017 Horizon League men's basketball tournament (also known as Motor City Madness) was the conference tournament for the Horizon League. It was played from March 3 through March 7, 2017 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Northern Kentucky defeated Milwaukee in the championship game to win the tournament championship. As a result, Northern Kentucky received the conference's automatic berth into the 2017 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament with a 59-53 win over Milwaukee.

Seeds

All 10 teams participated in the tournament. The top six teams receive a bye into the quarterfinals. This was a change from the previous season where the top two seeds received double byes into the semifinals. [1] Teams were seeded by record within the conference, with a tiebreaker system to seed teams with identical conference records.

The 2011 Horizon League men's basketball tournament was played Tuesday, March 1 through Tuesday, March 8. The Horizon League Network broadcast the opening rounds, which were played at the home courts of the higher seeds. The quarterfinals and semifinals were broadcast by ESPNU and took place at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, the home court of the #1 overall seed, the Milwaukee Panthers. As Milwaukee defeated Valparaiso in its semifinal match, it secured host status for the championship game against Butler as well; the final was broadcast by ESPN/ESPN3.com. Butler defeated Milwaukee 59–44 in the final, winning its second consecutive Horizon League tournament title and receiving an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA tournament.

The 2016 Horizon League women's basketball tournament was a postseason tournament from March 10 through March 13. For the first time every game will be available on an ESPN Network. Rounds 1 & 2 will be on ESPN3, with the semifinals on TWCS and simulcast on ESPN3. The championship will be on ESPNU. As a D2 to D1 transitioning school, Northern Kentucky were ineligible to compete in the NCAA tournament until the 2018 season, so they can not win the conference tournament since the winner received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. However Northern Kentucky is eligible to win the regular season title and is eligible to compete in the WNIT or WBI should they be invited. The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA women's tournament.

They finished the season 24–11, 13–6 in Horizon League play to finish in a tie for third place. The Vikings, led by first-year head coach Daniyal Robinson, play their home games at the Wolstein Center as members of the Horizon League. They finished the season 19–12, 16–6 in Horizon League play to tie for second place. As the No. 3 seed in the Horizon League tournament, they defeated Robert Morris and Milwaukee before losing to Northern Kentucky in the conference championship game. The Vikings received an automatic bid to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), where they lost in the first round in overtime to Eastern Kentucky.
