As of the next MAC tournament in 2021, the top eight teams in conference play will qualify for the tournament. Since 2000, the MAC Tournament has been held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland and is planned to be held there through at least 2030. The finals are broadcast on ESPN2 and the semi and quarterfinals are broadcast on Spectrum Sports and ESPN3.
The Kent State Golden Flashes men's basketball team represents Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, United States. The Golden Flashes compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level as a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Division. The team was founded in 1913 and played their first intercollegiate game in January 1915. They joined the Mid-American Conference in 1951 and have played in the East division since the MAC went to the divisional format in 1997. Home games are held at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center, which opened in 1950 and is one of the oldest arenas in college basketball. Rob Senderoff was hired as head coach in 2011, the 24th coach in the program's history.
The 2007 Mid-American Conference men's basketball tournament was the post-season men's basketball tournament for the Mid-American Conference (MAC) 2006–2007 season. It was won by No. 4 seed Miami University over No. 2 University of Akron 53–52 after a controversial finish. Miami guard Doug Penno banked in a three-point field goal with no time left on the clock to give Miami an apparent one-point victory. However, after a ten-minute delay, officials put 0.6 seconds back on the clock because the game clock did not start properly when Miami rebounded an Akron missed free throw. Because of the win in the conference tournament final, Miami was awarded the MAC's automatic berth into the 2007 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament.

The 1999 MAC men's basketball tournament, a part of the 1998–99 NCAA Division I men's basketball season, took place at SeaGate Centre in Toledo, Ohio. It was a single-elimination tournament with three rounds and included only the top eight conference teams. The quarterfinal round was held on the campus sites of the top four seeds, and the winners advanced to play the semifinal and final rounds in Toledo. It was the final Mid-American Conference men's basketball tournament that did not include all conference members, and the final tournament held in Toledo. Miami, the MAC regular season winner, received the number one seed in the tournament. Second-seeded Kent State won the tournament with a 49–43 win over Miami and received the Mid-American Conference's automatic bid to the 1999 NCAA tournament. It was Kent State's first MAC Tournament win and marked their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Miami was selected as an at-large entry for the NCAA Tournament. Through the 2016–17 season, it is the most recent time the MAC has had more than one team participate in the NCAA Tournament.

Home games are held at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center, which has been the team's home venue since 1977. The head coach is Todd Starkey, who was hired April 19, 2016.

The Golden Flashes, led by sixth year head coach Rob Senderoff, played their home games at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center, also known as the MAC Center, as members of the East Division of the Mid-American Conference. Kent State finished the regular season 22–14, 10–8 in MAC play to finish fourth in the MAC East division. As the No. 6 seed in the MAC tournament, the Flashes defeated Central Michigan, Buffalo, Ohio, and Akron to win the tournament for the first time since 2008. As a result, the Flashes received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 14 seed in the South region. In the First Round, they lost to UCLA.

Regular-season champion Buffalo defeated Toledo in the championship game to win the tournament and receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. There they defeated Arizona before losing to Kentucky.

The tournament's first-round games were held on campus sites at the higher seed on March 9. The remaining rounds were to be held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland on March 12, 13, and 14, 2020 and the champion was to receive the MAC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Just prior to the scheduled game on March 12 between top-seeded Akron and eighth-seeded Ohio, the conference announced that the remainder of the tournament, and the remainder of the women's tournament, were canceled in response to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

For the 2021 tournament, only the top eight teams qualified. The winner of the tournament received the MAC's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA tournament. Ohio defeated Buffalo in the final. Jason Preston of Ohio was named the tournament MVP. In the NCAA tournament Ohio defeated No. 4-seeded Virginia in the First Round before falling to No. 5-seeded Creighton in the Second Round.
The 2021 Mid-American Conference women's soccer tournament was the postseason women's soccer tournament for the Mid-American Conference held from October 31 through November 7, 2021. The First Round was held at campus sites. The semifinals and finals took place at Mickey Cochrane Stadium in Bowling Green, Ohio, home of the Bowling Green Falcons, the regular season conference champions. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The Bowling Green Falcons were the defending champions, and they successfully defended their title with a 3–0 win over Kent State in the final. The title was the sixth for the Bowling Green women's soccer program and the fourth for head coach Matt Fannon. As tournament champions, Bowling Green earned the Mid-American's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

Top-seeded Central Michigan defeated Kent State in the championship game by the score of 64–63 to win their first MAC men's basketball tournament and a bid to the NCAA tournament. The Zips, led by sixth-year head coach John Groce, played their home games at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio as members of the Mid-American Conference. As the third seed they defeated Buffalo in the first round of the MAC tournament before losing to Kent State to finish 22–11 and 13–5 in MAC play
