Overview

The match was played between 2016 League of Ireland Premier Division champions Dundalk and 2016 FAI Cup winners Cork City on 17 February 2017, at Turners Cross. [1] Cork City won the game 3-0, [2] with goals from Seán Maguire, Kevin O'Connor and Karl Sheppard, [2] making Cork City the first team to retain the trophy. This was the second successive match between the sides, [1] and Dundalk's third successive appearance in the competition.

Summary

Sean Maguire opened the scoring for Cork City in the 15th minute when Garry Buckley hit a long pass over the top which Maguire received and ran at Paddy Barrett before running to the left and firing low left footed thru the legs of Dundalk goalkeeper Gabriel Sava from a tight angle. [3] [4] Kevin O’Connor got the second goal of the game in the 68th minute when he curled left footed into the left corner of the net from a free-kick on the left just outside the penalty box. Sheppard got the third goal for Cork City in injury time when he cut in from the right and hit a low right footed shot from inside the six yard box into the corner of the net. [5] [6]

The President of Ireland's Cup, also known simply as the President's Cup, is an association football super cup featuring clubs from the Republic of Ireland football league system. It is a one-off match between the winners of the previous season's League of Ireland Premier Division and the FAI Cup, and similarly to the FA Community Shield in England, functions both as a domestic Super cup and a unofficial opener to the football season in Ireland. Because it is organised by the Football Association of Ireland, it is sometimes misleadingly referred to as the FAI President's Cup. However the president in the title refers to the President of Ireland and not the president of the FAI. The FAI has previously organised similar competitions, the Top Four Cup and the FAI Super Cup. A similarly named and formatted competition, the LFA President's Cup was organised by the Leinster Football Association.

John Caulfield is a retired League of Ireland footballer. He has been the manager of Galway United F.C. since August 2020. Caulfield spent the majority of his playing career at Cork City F.C. and was a prominent member of the team that won the 1992–93 League of Ireland Premier Division. He was also the League of Ireland Premier Division Top Scorer in both 1991–92 and 1994–95. As a manager Caulfield has won the 2016 FAI Cup, 2017 FAI Cup and 2017 League of Ireland Premier Division with Cork City F.C. Caulfield has also played Gaelic football and represented both Roscommon and Cork at inter-county level, winning an All-Ireland title with the latter.

The 2016 President's Cup was the third President's Cup contested for. The match was played between 2015 League of Ireland Premier Division champions Dundalk and 2015 FAI Cup runners-up Cork City on 27 February 2016, at Turners Cross. Cork City won the match 2-0, taking the lead in the 20th minute through Gavan Holohan and doubled the advantage in the second half through Sean Maguire’s header.

The 2016 FAI Cup Final was the final match of the 2016 FAI Cup, the national association football cup of the Republic of Ireland. The match took place on 6 November 2016 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, and wascontested between Cork City and Dundalk. The match was a repeat of the 2015 FAI Cup Final. Cork City won the game 1-0 after extra time with a late winning goal.

Mark O'Sullivan is an association footballer who played for League of Ireland Premier Division club Cork City as a striker for several years. O'Sullivan spent four years with Munster Senior League side Avondale United before signing for Cork City Foras in 2010. He later returned to Avondale United, before returning to Cork City in 2014. He signed for Waterford in 2017. He then joined Limerick in 2018, before returning to Avondale United in the summer of 2018, and rejoined Cork City in 2019.

The match took place on Sunday 5 November 2017 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, and was contested by Cork City and Dundalk. The match was a repeat of the 2015, and 2016 finals.

Ian Turner is an Irish former professional footballer who played in the League of Ireland throughout his career. He started his career with Cork City, who he spent six and a half seasons with. He also spent two and a half years with Limerick and St Patrick's Athletic where he spent a year and a half, before playing for Cobh Ramblers for three years where he retired in January 2022.

It took place on 9 February 2019, at Turners Cross and was won by Dundalk.

In January the club was taken over by United States-based investors, who had identified the club's European progress as a commercial opportunity. 2018 would turn out to be Stephen Kenny's sixth and final season as manager. He resigned one month after the end of the season to accept the Republic of Ireland U-21 manager's role, and was replaced by his assistant, Vinny Perth for 2019. The 2018 season was Dundalk's 10th consecutive season in the top tier of Irish football, their 83rd in all, and their 92nd in the League of Ireland.

Dundalk entered the 2017 season as the reigning League Champions from 2016, having won the title for the third year in a row, and having come off a successful Europa League run that saw them become the first Irish club to both win points and win a match in the group stage of European competition. 2017 was Stephen Kenny's fifth season at the club as manager. It was Dundalk's ninth consecutive season in the top tier of Irish football, their 82nd in all, and their 91st in the League of Ireland.
