All games of the tournament were played on campus sites hosted by the higher-seeded school. Vermont, the No. 1 seed in the tournament defeated Albany in the championship game to win the tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

It was held from March 7 through March 10, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. No. 2 seed Villanova defeated No. 5 seed Providence in the championship game to win the tournament and receive the conference's bid to the NCAA tournament. It was Villanova's second straight tournament championship.

This was the seventh time Vermont has won the America East tournament championship, which ties them with former member Northeastern for the most all time.

Starting in the semifinals, all tournament games were played on the home arenas of the higher-seeded school. In Pod Play and the Quarterfinals, games were played at either New Hampshire or Hartford. The winner received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Only six teams competed, as Binghamton, Hartford, UMBC, and Vermont suspended their seasons in January and February, due to COVID-19 issues.

All tournament games were played on the home arenas of the higher-seeded school.
