The 2018 Monaghan Senior Football Championship will be the 112th edition of Monaghan GAA's premier gaelic football tournament for senior clubs in County Monaghan, Ireland. Ten teams compete, with the winners representing Monaghan in the AIB GAA Ulster Club Senior Football Championship. The championship uses a double-elimination format for Rounds 1 and 2 before becoming knock-out. [1]
Scotstown are the defending champions after defeating Magheracloone in the 2017 final, [2] and will be aiming for their fourth consecutive title. The 2018 competition sees the return of Carrickmacross and Inniskeen to the Senior ranks following their promotion from the Intermediate competition. [3]
The two bottom-placed teams in the Monaghan Senior Football League are relegated to the Intermediate ranks for the following season, with the Intermediate Football Championship winners and Intermediate Football League winners promoted in their place. If a team wins both the Intermediate Championship and League, then the next highest placed team in the League will be promoted. [1]

County Monaghan is a county in Ireland. It is in the province of Ulster and is part of Border strategic planning area of the Northern and Western Region. It is named after the town of Monaghan. Monaghan County Council is the local authority for the county. The population of the county was 61,386 according to the 2016 census.
The Monaghan County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) or Monaghan GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Monaghan and the Monaghan county football and hurling teams. Separate county boards are responsible for the promotion & development of handball, camogie and ladies' football within the county, as well as having responsibility for their representative county players/teams. The current team sponsor of Monaghan GAA is Investec.
Ballybay is a town and civil parish in County Monaghan, Ireland. The town is centred on the crossroads of the R183 and R162 regional roads.

Inniskeen, officially Inishkeen, is a small village, townland and parish in County Monaghan, Ireland, close to the County Louth and County Armagh borders. The village is located about 17 kilometres (11 mi) from Dundalk, 11 km (7 mi) from Carrickmacross, and 5 km (3 mi) from Crossmaglen. Seven townlands of this Roman Catholic Diocese of Clogher parish lie within County Louth. Jack Mulholland and James Meegan are the official fathers and priests of the roman catholic church in this village (Inniskeen)
Carrickmacross Emmets is a Gaelic football club from Carrickmacross in County Monaghan in Ireland. The club was founded in 1887. The club participates in Monaghan competitions. The club has won the Monaghan Senior Football Championship eight times and have come runner-up seven times. The Club colours are Green and Yellow. The first club grounds played on were Athletic Grounds, then the Gaelic Grounds. In 1938 the club moved to its present grounds at Emmet Park, which was developed into one of the best venues in the county. It was officially opened in 1953 when Monaghan played Meath. In recent years the club secured property on the Donaghmoyne Road and have developed a full size playing pitch and a training area along with modern changing facilities that can cater for four teams. At present the site is chiefly used for training purposes for adult and juvenile teams as well as ladies and hurling teams but games can be played there when necessary.
Magheracloone Mitchells is a Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic football club from the parish of Magheracloone in County Monaghan, Ireland. The team participate in the Monaghan Senior Football Championship. The Magheracloone Mitchells GAA club pitch is situated on the main Carrickmacross-Kingscourt Road. On the site there are two pitches, modern changing rooms as well as a community centre and a handball alley.
Killanny Geraldines are a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football team from Killanny parish, County Monaghan, Ireland. The club was founded in 1889. They have never won the Monaghan Senior Football Championship to date but have been runners-up on 3 occasions.
Inniskeen Grattans Gaelic Athletic Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club, based in Inniskeen, County Monaghan, Ireland. The club participates in both Gaelic football and hurling competitions organized by Monaghan GAA county board. In 2010, the club won its first ever Monaghan Senior Hurling Championship title.
Tassan Rovers GAA was a Gaelic football team in Tassan, County Monaghan, Ireland. The Tassan team came together in early 1937 and participated in the Junior League Mid Monaghan section. The team was managed by Francis Brennan, John Mulligan, Peter Flanagan and Frank Murphy. Paddy Morgan, Lisdrumgormely was also associated with the team. The Tassan team wore red jerseys and trained and played football in a local meadow field known as the "Boggan" owned by Peter Flanagan and located up the Tassan road from Tommy Conlan's cottage and across the road from Owenie Morgan's house.

Generally, the championship uses a double-elimination format for Rounds 1 and 2 before becoming knock-out. However, for this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a round-robin system splitting the 10 senior clubs into two groups of five was used.
