The Mountain West Conference (MW) is one of the collegiate athletic conferences affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The MW officially began operations on January 4, 1999. Geographically, the MW covers a broad expanse of the Western United States, with member schools located in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. Gloria Nevarez took over as Commissioner of the MW on January 1, 2023, following the retirement of founding commissioner Craig Thompson.
The 2013 Mountain West Conference Football Championship Game determined the 2013 football champion of the Mountain West Conference (MW). The game, played at Bulldog Stadium on the campus of California State University, Fresno, was the first football conference championship game for the Mountain West Conference. The game featured the West Division champions Fresno State Bulldogs hosting the Mountain Division champions Utah State Aggies.

The five match tournament was held at the SDSU Sports Deck in San Diego, California. The six team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The San Jose State Spartans were the defending tournament champions after defeating the San Diego State Aztecs in a penalty kick shootout in the championship match.

The Mountain West Championship Game was played on December 2, where Mountain Division champion Boise State defeated West Division champion Fresno State to win their first Mountain West championship since 2014.

The five-match tournament took place at Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field in Las Vegas, Nevada. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The UNLV Rebels were the defending champions, but will not defend their title after having failed to qualify for the 2017 tournament. The San Diego State Aztecs won the tournament with a 3–0 win over the New Mexico Lobos in the final.

Since the 2012 12 teams have competed in the MW-football conference. The season will begin on August 25 and will end on November 24. Mountain West is a "Group of Five" conference under the College Football Playoff format along with the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, and the Sun Belt Conference. The Mountain West Championship Game will be played on December 1. The entire schedule was released on March 1.

Lauren Orlandos Hanson is an American former soccer player and soccer coach who played as a defender, making one appearance for the United States women's national team. She was previously the head women’s soccer coach at San José State University. She became the “winningest coach” in San José State women's soccer history in 2017 and is a two-time Mountain West Coach of the Year.

The five-match tournament took place at Boas Tennis/Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The San Jose State Spartans were the defending champions, but were unable to defend their title, losing to the New Mexico Lobos 1–0 in the first round. The San Jose State Spartans won the tournament with a 2–0 win over San Diego St in the final. This was the first tournament championship for Boise State, and the first for coach Jim Thomas. Boise State was the regular season champions two years in a row, but 2019 was the first time they converted that into a tournament title.
The 2020 New Mexico Lobos football team represented the University of New Mexico in the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Lobos played their home games at Sam Boyd Stadium in Whitney, Nevada as members of the Mountain West Conference due to COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the state of New Mexico. They were led by first-year head coach Danny Gonzales.
The 2020 San Jose State Spartans football team represented San José State University during the 2020 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Spartans were led by fourth-year head coach Brent Brennan and played their home games at CEFCU Stadium and Sam Boyd Stadium as members of the Mountain West Conference. They finished the regular season 6–0 in Mountain West play and defeated Boise State in the Mountain West championship game. This was the Spartans' first Mountain West championship win and 17th overall conference title. The championship victory also marked San Jose State's first win over Boise State in program history.
The 2020–21 Mountain West Conference men's basketball season began with practices in October 2020, followed by the start of the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in November. Conference play began in January 2021 and concluded in March 2021.

The 2021 Mountain West Conference women's soccer tournament was the postseason women's soccer tournament for the Mountain West Conference held from November 1 through November 6, 2021. The five-match tournament took place at Boas Tennis/Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. Boise State won the tournament in 2019 and are classified as the defending champions because there was no tournament held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. New Mexico were the regular season champions in 2020. Boise State was unable to defend their crown, losing to Fresno State on penalties in the Semifinals. New Mexico then defeated Fresno State in the finals 2–1 to win the title. This was the second tournament championship for New Mexico, their first since 2011. It was the first title for head coach Rob Baarts. As tournament champions, New Mexico earned the Mountain West's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

The Lobos were unable to defend their crown, losing to San Jose State in penalties in the Semifinals. San Jose State won the title after a second penalty shootout victory over Wyoming in the Final. This was the third tournament championship for San Jose State, their first since 2018. It was the first title for head coach Tina Estrada. As tournament champions, San Jose State earned the Mountain West's automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.
