The by-election to the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council for the Milton Ward took place on 21 March 2019. [1]

Background

The Milton by-election was called after the death of incumbent Labour councillor Julian Ware-Lane in January, [2] who was up for re-election in 2020. The Independents in Southend, who work together under Ron Woodley, announced they would not stand a candidate in respect of Ware-Lane's death. [3]

Elections to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council took place on 6 May 2021. This was on the same day as other local elections across the United Kingdom. The results saw the Conservatives and Labour pick up seats at the expense of the local Independents.

A by-election was held on 3 February 2022 in the parliamentary constituency of Southend West following the murder of the Conservative MP Sir David Amess on 15 October 2021. Amess had been the MP for the constituency since 1997, and previously represented the nearby seat of Basildon from 1983 to 1997. Similarly to the 2016 Batley and Spen by-election—held after Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered—the major opposition parties declined to stand out of respect for Amess. The Conservative candidate Anna Firth won the by-election with 86% of the vote, with a turnout of 24%. No other candidate reached the 5% threshold to save their election deposit.

A by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of West Lancashire was held on 9 February 2023, following the resignation of incumbent member of Parliament Rosie Cooper. She announced her resignation in order to take up the job as chair of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. Ashley Dalton held the seat for Labour.
