On April 17 and April 27, 2019, eight bodies were discovered at multiple locations in Sumner County, Tennessee. [1] The sole survivor, left in critical condition, died in 2022 due to major health problems after the injuries. A suspect, identified as Michael Cummins, was arrested for all nine attacks. [2] [3] The case was the worst mass murder in Tennessee in 20 years. [4]

Murders

On April 17, a headless body was discovered inside a burnt cabin. [3] Ten days later, on April 27 and into the following day, responding police officers found seven additional victims and one survivor at multiple crime scenes. The slain victims included four members of the Cummins family, who were slain in their home at Charles Brown Road; another victim found on Luby Brown Road; and two others. The victims were the mother, father, and uncle of perpetrator Michael Cummins; the uncle's girlfriend; and two members of the girlfriend's family. [4] [5] One of the deceased victims was a 12-year-old girl who was partially nude but was not sexually assaulted. All of the deaths were caused by blunt-force trauma to the head. [4]

The evidence at trial showed that Cummins first killed James Fox Dunn Jr. on April 17, 2019, whose home was burned and rifle was stolen. Several days later on April 24, Cummins killed 69-year-old Shirley Fehrle, a retired nurse. Prosecutors believe Cummins did not know Fehrle and killed her in order to steal her car. The following day, Cummins killed six people inside a trailer home.

Perpetrator

The killer was identified as another member of the Cummins family, Michael Cummins. He was slated to be arrested in the days before the bodies were found since he had violated probation by not having a mental health evaluation. A warrant was subsequently issued. [6] After the bodies of the victims were discovered, Cummins was considered a suspect due to not being found. He was later spotted and shot after he was cornered near a creek by multiple police officers. However, his trial was delayed many times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 9, 2022, he was found fit to stand trial. [7]

On August 16, 2023, Cummins pleaded guilty in the murders to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to eight life sentences. [8]

Channon Gail Christian, aged 21, and Hugh Christopher Newsom Jr., aged 23, were from Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. They were kidnapped on the evening of January 6, 2007, when Christian's vehicle was carjacked. The couple were taken to a rental house. Both of them were raped, tortured, and murdered. Four males and one female were arrested, charged, and convicted in the case. In 2007, a grand jury indicted Letalvis Darnell Cobbins, Lemaricus Devall Davidson, George Geovonni Thomas, and Vanessa Lynn Coleman on counts of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder. Also in 2007, Eric DeWayne Boyd was indicted by a federal grand jury of being an accessory to a carjacking, resulting in serious bodily injury to another person and misprision of a felony. In 2018, Boyd was indicted on state-level charges of kidnapping, robbery, rape, and murder.

Bruce D. Mendenhall is a convicted American murderer and serial killer. He was arrested in Tennessee in July 2007 and found guilty in 2010 of the June 26, 2007 murder of Sara Hulbert, whose body was found by the security guard on duty that night. Ryōta Uemura was a 13-year-old Japanese boy who was tortured and murdered in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture. His body was discovered in the Tama River on Friday, February 20, 2015, and the police arrested three boys in relation to the murder on the same day. Two of the suspects told the police that the alleged ringleader was inspired by Jihadi John's killings. It is unclear whether any of the three arrested suspects was the ringleader. The same two suspects also provided details of the circumstances of Uemura's murder.

The Vanderbilt rape case is a criminal case of sexual assault that occurred on June 23, 2013, in Nashville, Tennessee, in which four Vanderbilt University football players carried an unconscious 21-year-old female student into a dorm room, gang-raped and sodomized her, photographed and videotaped her, and one urinated on her face.

On April 22, 2018, a mass shooting occurred at a Waffle House restaurant in the Antioch neighborhood of Nashville, Tennessee, United States, when 29-year-old Travis Jeffrey Reinking fatally shot four people and injured two others with an AR-15 style rifle. Another two people were injured by broken glass. Reinking was rushed by an unarmed customer, James Shaw Jr., who wrestled the rifle away and stopped the shooting spree. Reinking was captured on April 23, ending a 34-hour manhunt.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nicholas Todd Sutton</span> Executed American serial killer

Nicholas Todd Sutton was an American serial killer who was responsible for murdering two acquaintances and his own grandmother in North Carolina and Tennessee from August to December 1979. Convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for these crimes, Sutton, among three others, later participated in a 1985 prison killing over drugs. For this final crime, he was sentenced to death and executed in 2020 by electric chair. Sutton is the most recent person to be executed in this manner.
