The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I collegiate athletic conference with a membership base in the Great Lakes region that stretches from Western New York to Illinois. Nine of the twelve full member schools are in Ohio and Michigan, with single members located in Illinois, Indiana, and New York. For football, the MAC participates in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision.

The school's team competed in NIU's full-time home of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) through the 2022 season, after which the conference stopped sponsoring men's soccer. NIU will move that sport to the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) effective with the 2023 season, joining fellow MAC members Bowling Green and Western Michigan in this move. NIU men's soccer started playing in 1962 and has appeared in the NCAA Tournament four times. The Huskies are coached by Ryan Swan.

The Toledo Rockets were the defending champions, but they did not qualify for the tournament after finishing 10th in the regular season. The Bowling Green Falcons won the tournament with a 5–4 penalty shootout win over the Ball State Cardinals in the final. The title was the third for the Bowling Green women's soccer program and the first for head coach Matt Fannon.

Toledo went to the NIT where they lost to Richmond in the first round.

The conference tournament title was the fourth for the Loyloa women's soccer program, all of which have come under head coach Barry Bimbi. The championship was also the fourth in a row for the Loyola program. As tournament champions, Loyola earned the Missouri Valley's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament.

The five-match tournament took place at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. for the semifinals and finals, while the first round was hosted by the higher seeded team. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the Seton Hall Pirates. They were unable to defendtheir title after not qualifying for the tournament and finishing in last place in the regular season standings. Georgetown finished as tournament champions after defeating Providence 2–1 in overtime in the final. This is the fifth title in program history for Georgetown, all of which have come under Head Coach Brian Wiese. As tournament champions, Georgetown earned the Big East's automatic place in the 2021 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.

All rounds of the tournament were hosted at the higher seeds home stadium. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The defending champions were the UC Davis Aggies. The Aggies won the tournament in 2019 and are classified as the defending champions because there was no tournament held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. UC Davis was unable to defend its crown, falling to UC Santa Barbara in the Semifinals. UC Santa Barbara would go on to win the title, defeating UC Irvine 4–0 in the final. This was the second Big West tournament title for the UC Santa Barbara program, both of which have come under head coach Tim Vom Steeg. As tournament champions, UC Santa Barbara earned the Big West's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.

The Denver Pioneers were the defending champions after no tournament was held in 2020. Denver were champions in 2019. Denver successfully defended their title, defeating Oral Roberts in the final in a penalty shoot-out. The tournament win was Denver's seventh as a member of the conference, and the title was the fourth for head coach Jamie Franks. Denver has now won seven of the past eight Summit League tournaments. As tournament champions, Denver earned the Summit League's automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament.

The Bowling Green Falcons were the defending champions, and they were unsuccessful in defending their title as they lost to Ball State on penalties in the Semifinals. Ball State would go on to lose to Buffalo in the Final 2–0. The title was the second for the Buffalo women's soccer program both of which have come under head coach Shawn Burke. As tournament champions, Buffalo earned the Mid-American's automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament.
