On 27 January 2022, a mass shooting occurred at a Pivdenmash factory in Dnipro, Ukraine. Five people were killed and five others injured. [2]
The killings occurred on 27 January 2022, at about 3:40 a.m. in the city of Dnipro, as guards began handing out weapons to the servicemen at Pivdenmash factory. [3] A National Guard of Ukraine conscript armed with a reported AK-47 assault rifle [4] [1] shot dead four male servicemen and one civilian woman, [a] and wounded five others. Two soldiers of the twenty-two soldiers present managed to escape and call an ambulance and policemen. The shooter fled the scene with his weapon. At about 9.30 am, he was detained in the town of Pidhorodne after he reported himself to the police. [6] [1]
The State Bureau of Investigation launched criminal proceedings against officials of the National Guard of Ukraine. [7]
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine created a special investigative commission, which is authorized to establish the causes of the tragedy. [8]
According to law enforcement agencies, Artemiy Riabchuk, a National Guard of Ukraine serviceman from the Odesa Oblast, born in 2001, was the one who had shot at the servicemen. The State Bureau of Investigation informed the detainee of suspicion of murder, desertion, and theft of weapons. A possible terrorist motive is not to be ruled out. [9]
According to one lawmaker, Riabchuk had been bullied in the past. [5]
As a result of the shooting, 5 people were killed and 5 others were seriously injured. [10] Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the shooting as "terrible" and extended messages of empathy to the victims' families. [1] [11] Over 40 National Guard members initiated a program to help victims receive blood donations. [5]
Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine Mykola Balan resigned in response. [12]
On 28 January 2022, the Kirovsky District Court of the city of Dnipro ordered Artemiy Ryabchuk to be detained without bail for a period of 60 days. [13]
On 11 March 2022 Ryabchuk's pretrial detention was extended until 9 May 2022. [14] Ryabchuk's case went to court in October 2022. [15]
On 23 April 2024 Ryabchuk was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. [15]

The National Guard of Ukraine is the Ukrainian national gendarmerie and internal military force. It is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, responsible for public security. On 9 May 2017, a fight broke out during the Victory Day over Nazism in World War II in Dnipro, Ukraine. On the morning of that day, veterans who had participated in the War in Donbas asked Opposition Bloc supporters at the event to remove the party flag with Soviet connotations and the Ribbon of Saint George, which is illegal in Ukraine, and then conflicts broke out. There are reports that the National Police of Ukraine not only failed to crack down on illegal opposition supporters, but also collaborated with Titushky to help beat soldiers. Witnesses said police used tear gas, smoke grenades and baton attacks during the fights.
The Sevastopol Park is a memorial park in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Siege of Sevastopol, the park was established in 1955. On the park's main lane there was a monument honoring the soldiers of the siege that was partly destructed on the order of the city council on 7 June 2024 to comply with derussification laws. The memorial was built by architect Petrov and given to the city, constructed from materials collected from Sevastopol itself.

It was established in 1992 as the 13th Regiment on the basis of the 26th battalion of the Internal Troops of the Soviet Union. It is currently headquartered in Sloviansk but was formerly located in Luhansk before its capture by separatist forces.
The 15th Separate National Guard Battalion is a battalion of the 2nd Galician Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with transport and escort of convicts and prisoners as well as the protection of public law and order and the Ukrainian territorial integrity. It was established in 1995 in Crimea but after the capture of its headquarters it was abolished and was reestablished in 2018 in Rivne.
The 18th Public Order Protection Battalion is battalion of the 11th Public Order Protection Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with law enforcement and maintenance of public order. It was established in 1996 in Yalta but temporarily ceased to exist following the defection of the majority of its personnel to Russia including its commander in 2014 but was reestablished in 2017. It is currently headquartered in Izmail.
The 1st Dnipropetrovsk Regiment for the Protection of particularly important State Objects is a regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with the protection of strategically important sites such as the PA Pivdenmash and the Dnipro Machine-Building Plant. It was established in 1991 and is currently headquartered at Dnipro although formerly a Battalion of the regiment was Garrisoned in Rubizhne as well.
