The 2022 Down Senior Hurling Championship was the 114th staging of the Down Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Down County Board in 1903.
Ballycran entered the championship as the defending champions. [1] [2]
The final was played on 9 October 2023 at Páirc Esler in Newry, between Portaferry and Ballycran, in what was their fifth consecutive meeting in the final. Portaferry won the match by 1-12 to 0-13 to claim their 22nd championship title overall and a first title in two years. [3] [4]

The Down County Board or Down GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) in Ireland, and is responsible for the administration of Gaelic games in County Down,.
The Down Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Down GAA clubs. The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1903.
The Mayo Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested since 1923 by the top Mayo GAA clubs.
The Cavan Senior Hurling Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition between the top hurling clubs in Cavan. The winners of the Cavan Championship qualify to represent their county in the Ulster Club Championship, the winners of which go on to the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship. This championship has never been played on a consistent basis, and has frequently not been completed. In 2010, Mullahoran won the title for the 21st successive year. That run of victories was ended in 2011 when Ballymachugh beat Mullahoran in the final. In 2017, Mullahoran won their first title in four years with a win over Cootehill on a scoreline of 4–19 to 0–05. Cootehill are the current champions, having won the 2022 championship title.

St Joseph's GAA Club, Ballycran is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Rubane, County Down, Northern Ireland. The club is exclusively concerned with hurling and camogie. The club competes in Down GAA competitions and in Division 1 of the Antrim Hurling League. The Club's grounds are called 'McKenna Park' and house the John Mallon Stand. Portaferry GAC is a GAA club in the east of County Down in the Ards Peninsula. It is one of three Senior Hurling Clubs in Down, the other two being Ballygalget GAA and Ballycran GAA.
Brian Martin Dowling is an Irish hurling manager and former player. At club level he played with O'Loughlin Gaels, and also lined out at inter-county level with various Kilkenny teams. Dowling has also served as manager of the Kilkenny senior camogie team.
