A by-election was in the Tasmanian Legislative Council seat of Pembroke on 10 September 2022, triggered by the resignation of Jo Siejka, who did so in order to spend more time with her family. [1]

Background

Jo Siejka, nominated by the Australian Labor Party, was first elected to the seat of Pembroke at a 2017 by-election following the resignation Vanessa Goodwin who had been diagnosed with multiple brain tumours in March of that year, defeating her Liberal opponent by 7.4% in the two-party preferred count. [2] [3] Siejka, who was Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council and held the shadow portfolios of disability, ageing and veterans, announced that she would resign before the expiry of her electoral mandate, in order to spend more time with her family. [1]

A by-election was held in the Tasmanian Legislative Council division of Pembroke on 1 August 2009. It was triggered by the resignation of sitting member Allison Ritchie.

The 2014 Tasmanian state election was held on 15 March 2014 to elect all 25 members to the House of Assembly. The 16-year incumbent Labor government, led by the Premier of Tasmania Lara Giddings, sought to win a fifth consecutive term in government, but was defeated by the Liberal opposition, led by Opposition Leader Will Hodgman, in a landslide victory. Also contesting the election was the Greens led by Nick McKim. The Palmer United Party made a significant effort in the election.

Montgomery was last contested in 2002, while Nelson and Pembroke were last contested in 2001.

The United Australia Party (UAP), formerly known as Clive Palmer's United Australia Party and the Palmer United Party (PUP), is a currently deregistered Australian political party formed by mining magnate Clive Palmer in April 2013. The party was deregistered by the Australian Electoral Commission in 2017, revived and re-registered in 2018, and voluntarily deregistered in 2022. Montgomery and Nelson were previously contested in 2013. Pembroke was won by the Labor Party in a 2017 by-election, following the resignation of the sitting member, Vanessa Goodwin of the Liberal Party.

Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 7 May 2022. Two seats were up for a regularly scheduled vote; Elwick and McIntyre. Simultaneously a by-election was held in the seat of Huon, following the resignation of the incumbent member Bastian Seidel.

Luke Edmunds is an Australian politician, who was elected to the Tasmanian Legislative Council as the Labor member for Pembroke since he was elected at the 2022 Pembroke state by-election replacing Jo Siejka.
