A flood occurred in the city of Pyin Oo Lwin of Mandalay Region on 31 July 2022. [1] It was the biggest flood in the township in the past 30 years with rainfall of 10.47 inches in eight hours. [2] [3]
The flood was caused by increase in flow in Gelaung Creek due to a torrential rainfall in the Mandalay Region from 2 am of 31 July up to the next day. The flood caused collapse of building and bridges. The flood affected people were rescued by police force, fire brigade and local volunteers. The lower part of the auxiliary spillway of Doe Kwin dam was also damaged. [4] Residents and government security forces collectively took part in rescue and cleaning operation after the flood. [3]
Pyin Oo Lwin or Pyin U Lwin, formerly and colloquially referred to as Maymyo, is a scenic hill town in the Mandalay Region, Myanmar, some 67 kilometers (42 mi) east of Mandalay, and at an elevation of 1,070 metres (3,510 ft). The town was estimated to have a population of around 255,000 in 2014.
Mogok is a town in the Thabeikkyin District of Mandalay Region of Myanmar, located 200 kilometres (120 mi) north of Mandalay and 148 kilometres (92 mi) north-east of Shwebo.
Mandalay Region is an administrative division of Myanmar. Meiktila is a city in central Burma on the banks of Meiktila Lake in the Mandalay Region at the junctions of the Bagan-Taunggyi, Yangon-Mandalay and Meiktila-Myingyan highways. Because of its strategic position, Meiktila is home to Myanmar Air Force's central command and Meiktila Air Force Base. The country's main aerospace engineering university, Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University is also located in Meiktila. As of 2021, the city had a population of 177,442.
Pakokku is the largest city in the Magway Region of Myanmar. It is situated about 30 km northeast of Bagan on the Irrawaddy River. It is the administration seat of Pakokku Township, Pakokku District and Gangaw District. Pakokku Bridge is part of the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway and is the longest bridge in Myanmar. It is home of the Pakokku Airport.
The Defence Services Technological Academy (DSTA) (Burmese: တပ်မတော် နည်းပညာ တက္ကသိုလ်, pronounced[taʔmədɔ̀nípjɪ̀ɰ̃ɲàtɛʔkəθò]), located in Pyin-Oo-Lwin, Myanmar, is the premier technological university of the Myanmar Armed Forces. One of the most selective universities in the country, the academy offers various Bachelor of Engineering degrees to male cadets only. Upon graduation, most DSTA cadets are commissioned as Engineering Officers with the rank of Lieutenant in one of the three branches of Burmese armed forces--army, navy, and air force. Some qualified cadets may choose (or be chosen) to pursue further education in Yangon Technological University, Mandalay Technological University or abroad. Brigadier General Kyi Khine is the Commandant of Defense Services Technological Academy (DSTA).
Pyin Oo Lwin District is a district of the Mandalay Region in central Burma. It lies northeast of Mandalay, with the Myitnge River as its southern boundary. To the east it is bordered by Shan State and in part by the Chaung Magyi. It goes north as far as the town of Dakaung where it adjoins Htigyaing Township, Katha District in Sagaing Region. Its western boundary, is for the most part the Irrawaddy, but a very small portion of Thabeikkyin Township is west of the Irrawaddy, near the town of Baw in Sagaing Region. To the southwest it borders Mandalay District.
Mogok Township is a township of Thabeikkyin District in Mandalay Region, Burma (Myanmar). It is located north of the city of Mandalay and surrounds the town of Mogok.
Nawnghkio, variously spelt Naunghkio, Naungcho or Nawngcho, is a town in Kyaukme District, in northern Shan State, Burma. It is the principal town and administrative seat of Nawnghkio Township. It is connected to Mandalay, Pyin U Lwin, Kyaukme, Hsipaw and Lashio by road and rail and by road to Taunggyi via National Road 43. Asia World Company won the contract to rebuild part of the road in 2002. Originally on the Mandalay-Lashio Road, after Pyin U Lwin and before Kyaukme, Nawnghkio is on what is now the Mandalay-Muse Road, part of the Asian Highway Route 14 (AH14).
Kyaukme is a town in northern Shan State of Burma. It is situated on the Mandalay - Lashio road, after Pyin Oo Lwin and Nawnghkio, and before Hsipaw, on what is now the Mandalay - Muse road, part of the Asian Highway route 14 (AH14). It is also connected to Momeik (Mongmit) in the Shweli River valley and Mogok with its ruby mines. Kyaukme can be reached by train on the Mandalay-Lashio railway line. As of 2014, the population was 39,930.
The Shan Hills, also known as Shan Highland, is a vast mountainous zone that extends through Yunnan to Myanmar and Thailand. The whole region is made up of numerous peaks separated mostly by narrow valleys, as well as a few broader intermontane basins. The ranges in the area are aligned in such a way that they link to the foothills of the Himalayas further to the northwest.
Lamaing is a village in Madaya Township, Pyin Oo Lwin District, in the Mandalay Region of central Burma. It is located southeast of Madaya and north of Mandalay, connected along the National Highway 31. On October 1, 1886 there was a reported small native garrison at Lamaing.
Yenatha or Yentha is a village in Madaya Township, Pyin Oo Lwin District, in the Mandalay Region of central Burma. It is located 7 miles northeast of Madaya, connected by the National Highway 31. The Japanese were reported to have "put up pockets of resistance" at Yenatha during World War II. The Madaya River flows nearby to the south and joins the Irrawaddy River as well as the Yenatha Canal as part of the Mandalay Canal network. The Yenatha Irrigation Scheme has been funded by the Asian Development Bank, who recognizes the importance and potential of agriculture and fisheries in the area. The canal involves a pump irrigation scheme and cost some 9,900,000 kyat to build. A Leprosy hospital lies to the south of Yenatha.
Peik Chin Myaung (ပိတ်ချင်းမြောင်လိုဏ်ဂူ) is a limestone stalactite cave situated south of Wetwun village, 23 km from Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar. The cave is a tourist site on the Lashio road.
Severe flooding in Myanmar began in July 2015 and continued into September, affecting 12 of the country's 14 states, resulting in about 103 deaths and affecting up to 1,000,000 people. Most of the casualties were reported from the Irrawaddy Delta. Torrential rains that began on 16 July destroyed farmland, roads, rail tracks, bridges and houses, leading the government to declare a state of emergency on 30 July in the four worst-hit regions in the west—Magway Division, Sagaing Division, Chin State and Rakhine State.

Pyin-O-Lwin Bird Sanctuary is a protected area in Myanmar's Pyinoolwin Township in Mandalay Region covering an area of 127.25 km2 (49.13 sq mi). It was gazetted in 1918 and spans an elevation of 975–1,210 m (3,199–3,970 ft). It is one of four protected wetlands.
Thura Ma Chit Po was a Burmese woman who was the one and only civilian woman to have received the Thura medal for bravery. She gathered intelligence on the Karen National Defence Organisation (KNDO) on behalf of the Myanmar Military before she was caught and executed by the KNDO insurgents.
The Army Officers Training School, Bahtoo is an officer candidate school for the Myanmar Army located in Bahtoo Station, Shan State, Myanmar. The Commandant of the OTS is Brigadier General Myo Zaw Win. OTS trains army warrant officers and non-commissioned officers, and is one of the country's main institutions for training army officers, along with the Defence Services Academy (DSA). Coursework at OTS typically spans nine months, and graduating cadets receive army commissions. OTS cadets generally have more experience in civilian life than other counterparts.
