Carl Eduard Verheijen is a retired Dutch speed skater who specialized in the longer distances 5,000 m and the 10,000 m. Verheijen is the son of international speed skaters Rieneke Demming and Eddy Verheijen. He is in a relationship with retired skater Andrea Nuyt in Leusden. They have a daughter. Carl's brother Frank Verheijen is a marathon skater.
Sven Kramer is a retired Dutch long track speed skater who has won an all time record nine World Allround Championships as well as a record ten European Allround Championships. He is the Olympic champion of the 5000 meters at the Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics, and won a record 21 gold medals at the World Single Distance Championships; eight in the 5000 meters, five in the 10,000 meters, and eight in the team pursuit. Kramer is the current world record holder in the team pursuit and broke the world records in the 5000 meter and 10,000 meter events three times. By winning the 2010 World Allround Championship, Kramer became the first speed skater in history to win four consecutive world allround championships and eight consecutive international allround championships. He was undefeated in the 18 international allround championships he participated in from the 2006/2007 season until the 2016/2017 season. From November 2007 to March 2009, he was ranked first in the Adelskalender, but despite his dominance as an all-round skater he has since been overtaken on that list by Shani Davis and, more recently, by his teammate Patrick Roest.
Irene Karlijn (Ireen) Wüst is a Dutch former long track speed skater of German ancestry. Wüst became the most successful speed skating olympian ever by achieving at least one gold medal in each of five consecutive Winter Olympic appearances and is the only athlete to win an individual gold medal in five consecutive Olympics, Summer or Winter.
The World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships are a series of speed skating competitions organised by the International Skating Union. The World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships for Men was introduced, also by ISU, in 1996, and has been occurring annually ever since.

Ted-Jan Bloemen is a Dutch-Canadian long track speed skater. He started competing for the Canadian national speed skating team during the 2014–15 season, but before that, he competed for the Netherlands in international competitions. Bloemen primarily competes in long-distance events as well as team pursuit events. He is a former world record holder for the 5,000 m (6:01.86), set in Salt Lake City, and the Olympic record holder for the 10,000 m (12:39.77), set winning gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Bloemen also won a silver medal in the 5,000 m at the Pyeongchang Olympics, the first Canadian male to medal in the distance since 1932. He has won a silver in 10,000 m and one bronze and silver in the team pursuit at the World Speed Skating Championships.
Denis Igoryevich Yuskov is a Russian speed skater. He is a three-time gold medalist in men's 1500 meters at the World Single Distance Championships and the World Cup-2016 holder at the distance 1500 m.
Carlijn Achtereekte is a Dutch former speed skater who specialises in long distances. Achtereekte won three silver medals in the 5000 metres at the Dutch Single Distance Championships. At the 2015 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, she won the silver medal at the 5000 metres event behind Martina Sáblíková. Currently Achtereekte is a professional cyclist, competing for Team Jumbo–Visma.

The 2020 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships were held at the Thialf skating rink in Heerenveen from Friday 27 December 2019 to Sunday 29 December 2019. Although the tournament was held in 2019 it was the 2020 edition as it was part of the 2019–2020 speed skating season.

The men's mass start at the 2016 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships in Heerenveen took place at Thialf ice rink on Tuesday 29 December 2015. There were 29 participants. This mass start event was the first time that it was officially part of he Dutch national speed skating championships.
The 2022 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships were held at the Thialf skating rink in Heerenveen from Friday 28 October 2021 to Sunday 30 October 2021. Although the tournament was held in 2021 it was the 2022 edition as it was part of the 2021–2022 speed skating season.
The 2023 KNSB Dutch Allround Championships in speed skating were held in Heerenveen at the Thialf ice skating rink from Tuesday 27 December to Wednesday 28 December 2022. The tournament was part of the 2022–2023 speed skating season. Patrick Roest and Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong won the allround titles. Patrick Roest won all four distances. Only the top 8 athletes after the 1500 meters were eligible to skate the final distance. The allround championships were held on the same day as the 2023 KNSB Sprint Allround Championships.
The men's 500 meter at the 2023 KNSB Dutch Single Distance Championships took place in Heerenveen at the Thialf ice skating rink on Friday 3 February 2023. There were 20 participants who raced twice over 500m so that all skaters had to start once in the inner lane and once in the outer lane. Merijn Scheperkamp, Hein Otterspeer, and Dai Dai N'tab qualified for the 2023 ISU World Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen.
