A series of shootings occurred in multiple cities across the United States during 2024's Fourth of July celebrations. All together, the shootings left at least 33 dead and dozens more injured nationwide. [1]

Background

The Fourth of July is historically one of the nation's deadliest days of the year. [2] [ vague ] A flurry of shootings in 2023 left more than a dozen dead and over 60 wounded. [3] [ relevant? ] Violence and mass shootings tend to increase during summer months, with more large gatherings taking place, school letting out, and hotter temperatures.[ citation needed ]

Chicago shootings

In Chicago alone, 13 people were killed and 61 were wounded in shootings during the extended Fourth of July weekend. [4] A shooting on Thursday killed two women and an 8-year-old boy in Chicago's South Side neighborhood. [5] Eight people were wounded in Chicago's Little Italy neighborhood shortly after midnight on Friday. [6] 90 minutes later, a shooting in the city's Austin neighborhood left 6 wounded. [7]

Philadelphia shooting

In Philadelphia, a mass shooting left 1 dead and 8 others injured. [8]

California shootings

In Huntington Beach, two people were killed and three others were injured less than two hours after a fireworks show ended. [9] Authorities later arrested a 26-year-old local suspect and was taken into custody.

Other incidents

In Niles, Ohio, Police said a 15-year-old boy, identified as Andrew James Cunningham, was in custody after a 23-year-old man, Brandon Bork, was fatally shot on Thursday night at a Fourth of July party. [10] A 10-year-old girl, identified as Gracie Griffin was fatally shot in Cleveland. [11]

Aftermath

Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, said that the recent violence "left our city in grief". A community rally was planned for Friday evening, and police presence will increase during the weekend. Recent violence at a beach at Lake Michigan caused it to be closed early through the holiday weekend as a precaution. [12]

Two days later, several people were arrested in connection with the shooting, including a 15-year-old boy.

On May 30, 2021, twenty-three people were shot, of whom three were killed, in a mass shooting outside a banquet hall in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. Some of the suspects in the shooting are still at large.

On May 19, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in Chicago, Illinois, United States, in the city's Magnificent Mile shopping district, near Michigan Avenue. Two people were killed, and eight others were injured. The accused perpetrator, Jaylun Sanders, was taken into custody by Chicago police.

On July 4, 2022, a mass shooting occurred during an Independence Day parade in Highland Park, Illinois, United States. The shooting occurred at 10:14 a.m. CDT (UTC−05:00), roughly 15 minutes after the parade had started. Seven people were killed, and 48 others were wounded by bullets or shrapnel.

On July 17, 2022, a mass shooting occurred at the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana, United States. The shooting occurred at 5:56 p.m. EDT (UTC−04:00) and lasted less than one minute. Three people were killed and two others were injured in the shooting before the perpetrator, 20-year-old Jonathan Sapirman, was fatally shot by 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, a legally-armed civilian bystander.

On October 13, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in the Hedingham neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Five people were killed, and two others were injured. The accused, a male juvenile named Austin Thompson, was detained after being cornered by police at a nearby residence and was in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head sustained during the incident. Thompson survived his head injury and has begun to receive physical rehabilitation. He was transferred from a hospital to the medical unit of a juvenile correctional facility.

On July 2–3, 2023, a shooting spree occurred in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Five people were killed and four people were injured. The police apprehended the shooter without incident.

On June 21, 2024, four people were killed and nine others injured in a mass shooting at the Mad Butcher supermarket in Fordyce, Arkansas, United States.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2024 Chicago train shooting</span> Mass shooting aboard a Chicago "L" train

On September 2, 2024, a mass shooting occurred aboard a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line train as it traveled between Oak Park station and Harlem station. Four people were killed at random. The alleged shooter was taken into custody and charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
