Brenda Villa is an American accomplished water polo player. She is the most decorated athlete in the world of women’s water polo. Villa was named Female Water Polo Player of the Decade for 2000-2009 by the FINA Aquatics World Magazine. She is one of four female players who competed in water polo at four Olympics; and one of two female athletes who won four Olympic medals in water polo. She is a leading goalscorer in Olympic water polo history, with 31 goals. In 2018, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame.

Eight teams qualified for the Games, with Italy defeating the host nation Greece for the gold medal. The United States won the bronze medal.

After playing in groups within the same continent, eight teams qualify to play in a final tournament, called the Super Final in Changshu, China from 29 May - 3 June 2012. The two teams that reach the final of the Super Final will be the first teams to quality for the water polo tournament of the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona.

It was played between November 2016 and June 2017 and open to all women's water polo national teams. After participating in a preliminary round, eight teams qualify to play in a final tournament, called the Super Final from 06 to 11 June 2017.

The 2022 FIBA U18 Women's Asian Championship was the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia at the 2023 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup. The tournament, which was also the 25th edition of the biennial competition, was held in Bangalore, India from 5 to 11 September. The top four teams qualified and will represent FIBA Asia in the 2023 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain.
The 2024 Men's European Water Polo Championship was the 36th edition of the tournament, held in Dubrovnik and Zagreb, Croatia from 4 to 16 January 2024. Originally, Israel had been selected as host and the competition was slated to be held in Netanya, from 3 to 16 January 2024. Due to security concerns after the breakout of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, LEN announced the Championship would be hosted elsewhere.
The 2024 Women's European Water Polo Championship was the 20th edition of the tournament. It was held in Eindhoven, Netherlands from 5 to 13 January 2024. It was scheduled to be held in Netanya, Israel, But the competition was taken away from Israel for security reasons after the 2023 Israel–Hamas war commenced. This edition was the first one to be played by 16 teams.
The 2023 Pan American Water Polo Championships was the 10th edition of the continental championship, organised by the Swimming Union of the Americas. The competition was the 10th for men and 8th for women. This is the first tournament since being renamed as the 2023 Pan American Water Polo Championships. The event was held in Bauru, Brazil.
The 2024 Men's European U-19 Water Polo Championship was the 28th edition of the Men's European U-19 Water Polo Championship. The tournament was played in Burgas, Bulgaria from 1 to 7 September 2024. Serbia were the defending champions, but were eliminated in quarterfinals. Croatia won the tournament for the first time.
The 2024 Women's European U-19 Water Polo Championship was the 15th edition of the Women's European U-19 Water Polo Championship. The tournament was played in Zagreb, Croatia from 24 to 31 August 2024. Spain were the two-time defending champions and successfully defended their title with a win over Hungary in the final.
The 2024 World Aquatics Men's U18 Water Polo Championships was the 6th edition of the men's U18 Water Polo Championship. The tournament was played in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 2 to 9 July 2024. Hungary were the defending champions. Hungary won their third title after beating Serbia in the final.
