The 28th Street Metro Cruise, commonly known as the Metro Cruise, is an annual auto show and car cruise event held on 28th Street in Wyoming, Grand Rapids and Kentwood, Michigan, typically occurring one week after the Woodward Dream Cruise. Participants often cruise in their vehicles down 28th Street, driving 15 miles (24 km) between Grandville and Cascade Township and participating in events occurring in the corridor. [1] [2]

Cruising down 28th Street near Rogers Plaza in Wyoming was a common pastime for car enthusiasts in the late 20th century when the street was the main retail corridor from the 1960s until the 1990s. [3] [4] In 1999 when Rivertown Crossings Mall opened in Grandville near the southwest border of Wyoming, many commercial tenants left the 28th Street corridor. [5] [6] Following the opening of the M-6 highway in late-2004, the Wyoming-Kentwood Area Chamber of Commerce planned the first Metro Cruise to be held in August 2005 in an initiative to bring business to 28th Street. [3] [7]

The first Metro Cruise in 2005 experienced 85,000 visitors and 15,000 vehicles participating in one day. [3] [8] In 2007, the cruise was expanded to two days of events and the prohibition of burnouts was strictly enforced following the Selmer, Tennessee burnout tragedy, when 6 were killed and 20 injured after a funny car crashed into a crowd during a burnout. [3] [8] [9] [10] In 2015, a locally restored GM Futurliner participated in the cruise and was added to the National Historic Vehicle Register. [11] By 2019, between 250,000 and 275,000 people visited the Metro Cruise. [8] [12] In 2020, the Metro Cruise was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. [12] The cruise would return the following year in 2021, producing an estimated $7 million for the local economy that week. [13]

Events

The main event sites for the Metro Cruise are two shopping malls; Rogers Plaza and Woodland Mall. [8] [14] The majority of events are free and include classic automobile shows, concerts, dynamometer testing, food concessions and the Miss Metro Cruise pin-up girl contest. [14] [15]

Soul Cruise

In 2022, a separately-organized Soul Cruise event began to be held annually on the Sunday following the Metro Cruise, with the cruise being located primarily within the southeast side of Grand Rapids. [16]

Interstate 196 (I-196) is an auxiliary Interstate Highway that runs for 80.6 miles (129.7 km) in the US state of Michigan. It is a state trunkline highway that links Benton Harbor, South Haven, Holland, and Grand Rapids. In Kent, Ottawa, and Allegan counties, I-196 is known as the Gerald R. Ford Freeway, or simply the Ford Freeway, after President Gerald Ford, who was raised in Grand Rapids and served Michigan in the House of Representatives for 25 years. This name generally refers only to the section between Holland and Grand Rapids. I-196 changes direction; it is signed as a north–south highway from its southern terminus to the junction with US Highway 31 (US 31) just south of Holland, and as an east–west trunkline from this point to its eastern terminus at an interchange with I-96, its parent highway. There are three business routes related to the main freeway. There are two business loops and one business spur that serve South Haven, Holland and the Grand Rapids areas. Another business spur for Muskegon had been designated relative to the I-196 number.

It runs through both rural woodlands and busy commercial areas before it terminates at another interchange with I-96 in Cascade Township. Locally known as Wilson Avenue and 28th Street, the trunkline is listed on the National Highway System. M-11 carries between 8,000 and 42,000 vehicles on average each day.

M-121 is a state trunkline highway in West Michigan. The highway follows Chicago Drive, a local roadway, from Zeeland to Grandville. M-121 forms the main street through the center of Hudsonville as it runs southwest–northeast. It forms a major street through the unincorporated community of Jenison before M-121 terminates at I-196 in Grandville.

The Ottawa-Kent Conference is an athletic league located in West Michigan. Its current leader is David VanNoord. It has member schools from Allegan, Ionia, Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon, and Ottawa Counties. It has 48 member schools that partake in athletics. According to the MHSAA they have the main offices located at Grandville High School.

The 2013 Grand Rapids flood lasted from April 12 to 25, 2013, affecting multiple areas in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. Sudden heavy rainfall, saturation of the ground from rainwater and the flow of tributaries caused the Grand River to rise dramatically, with the river cresting at 21.85 feet (6.66 m) in Grand Rapids on April 21, 2013. The flooding caused thousands of residents in the area to evacuate their homes.
