The 33DD (also known as DDR or Destroyer Revolution) was a Japanese destroyer proposed for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The tentative name of the class, 33 DD, is derived from an estimate that it would be budgeted in the Japanese era of Heisei 33 (2021). However, the fiscal 2021 budget, which was released in 2020, does not include 33 DD, and the plan for the destroyer is not concrete.
The first concept model of the destroyer was shown in Defense Technology Symposium 2010 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The project was also mentioned in the FY2011 defense budget request, only mentioning that research on new integrated antenna system and sonar system for next generation destroyers is to be carried out around 2018. [1] Later a second model was shown in Defense Technology Symposium 2012. [2] [3]
The destroyer will feature an integrated mast, a Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) hull and will have a slightly higher displacement than the Asahi-class destroyer. [2] The CFRP hull reduces the ship's electromagnetic signature and its structural elasticity provides protection against torpedoes and mines. [3] The hull will also be made of high strength stainless steel due to its superior protection from air and underwater explosion compared to high tensile steel. [4] [5] [6] The first model unveiled is described to displace 5400 tons and is very similar in design to the Asahi-class destroyers. The second concept model displaces 5100 tons and features a stealthier design than first. [3] The FCS-3 system and integrated radio wave systems is used to enhance the ship's communication, radar, and electronic warfare capabilities. [2]
In naval terminology, a destroyer is a fast, manoeuvrable, long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against powerful short range attackers. They were originally developed in 1885 by Fernando Villaamil for the Spanish Navy as a defense against torpedo boats, and by the time of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, these "torpedo boat destroyers" (TBDs) were "large, swift, and powerfully armed torpedo boats designed to destroy other torpedo boats". Although the term "destroyer" had been used interchangeably with "TBD" and "torpedo boat destroyer" by navies since 1892, the term "torpedo boat destroyer" had been generally shortened to simply "destroyer" by nearly all navies by the First World War.

The Zumwalt-class destroyer is a class of three United States Navy guided-missile destroyers designed as multi-mission stealth ships with a focus on land attack. It is a multi-role class that was designed with a primary role of naval gunfire support and secondary roles of surface warfare and anti-aircraft warfare. The class design emerged from the DD-21 "land attack destroyer" program as "DD(X)" and was intended to take the role of battleships in meeting a congressional mandate for naval fire support. The ship is designed around its two Advanced Gun Systems (AGS), turrets with 920 round magazines, and unique Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP) ammunition. LRLAP procurement was canceled, rendering the guns unusable, so the Navy re-purposed the ships for surface warfare. Starting in 2023, the Navy will remove the AGS from the ships and replace them with hypersonic missiles.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, abbreviated JMSDF, also simply known as the Japanese Navy, is the maritime warfare branch of the Japan Self-Defense Forces, tasked with the naval defense of Japan. The JMSDF was formed following the dissolution of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) after World War II. The JMSDF has a fleet of 154 ships, 346 aircraft and 50,800 personnel.
The CG(X) program, also known as the Next Generation Cruiser program, was a United States Navy research program to develop a replacement vessel for its 22 Ticonderoga-class cruisers. Original plans were for 18–19 ships, based on the 14,500 ton Zumwalt-class destroyer with additional ballistic missile defense and area air defense for a carrier group. These vessels were to enter service beginning in 2017. The program was ended in 2010 with its mission to be fulfilled by the successor to the Flight III Arleigh Burke–class destroyers.

SC-21 was a research and development program started in 1994 intended to design land attack ships for the United States Navy. A wide variety of designs were created and extensively examined, including an arsenal ship with 500 cruise missiles. Eventually a "tumblehome" design of around 16,000 tons with two long-range guns and 128 missile tubes was selected as the DD-21, the Destroyer for the 21st century. The program ended in November 2001.

The Taigei-class submarines (29SS) (Japanese: たいげい, "Big Whale") is a new class of attack submarines developed for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. It is the successor to the Sōryū class. The Taigei class is equipped with a large amount of lithium-ion batteries, as is the case with the eleventh and twelfth submarines of the Sōryū class, making it possible for the submersible to travel longer and at higher speeds under water than conventional diesel-electric submarines.

JS Asuka (ASE-6102) is an experimental ship of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The vessel was constructed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries of Tokyo, Japan and was launched on 21 June 1994. Asuka was commissioned on 22 March 1995 and since then has conducted performance confirmation tests for integrated navigation systems.
The DDG(X) program, also known as the Next-Generation Guided-Missile Destroyer program, is a United States Navy program to develop a class of surface combatant vessels to succeed its 22 Flight II Ticonderoga-class cruisers and 27 Flight I/II Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. The program is the culmination of the Large Surface Combatant (LSC) initiative that followed the cancellation of CG(X) and curtailing of the procurement of the Zumwalt-class destroyer. The ships will become the principal large surface combatants of the U.S. Navy; compared to their predecessors, they will incorporate more powerful sensors and have more room and weight margin for growth.
Aegis system equipped vessels (ASEV) or イージス・システム搭載艦 in Japanese is the designation for a proposed pair of cruiser-sized ballistic missile defense (BMD) warships to be operated by the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) as dedicated ship-based BMD platforms, serving as an alternative to Japan's now-cancelled land-based Aegis Ashore BMD system. When completed, the two warships will be the largest surface combatant ships in service with the JMSDF, and according to Popular Mechanics, they will "arguably [be] the largest deployable surface warships in the world."
