The 3rd Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons was a cavalry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). In December 1936, the 3rd Dragoons were amalgamated with The Peterborough Rangers to form The Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough Regiment). [1] [2] [3] [4]

History

Early history

The 3rd Dragoons were originally formed on 30 April 1875, as the 3rd Provisional Regiment of Cavalry. Its regimental headquarters was established at Cobourg and had troops stationed at Cobourg, Port Hope and Peterborough . [1] [2] [3]

On 14 October 1881, the regiment were Redesignated as the 3rd Provisional Regiment of Cavalry, The Prince of Wales’ Canadian Dragoons. [1] [2] [3]

On 25 November 1892, the regiment were again Redesignated as the 3rd Regiment of Cavalry, The Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons. [1] [2] [3] [5]

On 1 January 1893, the regiment were for the final time Redesignated as the 3rd The Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons. [1] [2] [3] [5] [6]

1920s–1930s

During the post-WWI years, the 3rd Dragoons were authorized a Reserve unit under Canadian Militia General Order 185 dated 1 November 1920. [2] [3]

On 15 December 1936, as part of the 1936 Canadian Militia Reorganization, [7] the 3rd Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons were Amalgamated with The Peterborough Rangers along with the Headquarters and "C" Company of the 4th Machine Gun Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps, to form The Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough Regiment) (now the 50th Field Artillery Regiment (The Prince of Wales Rangers), RCA which is currently on the Supplementary Order of Battle ). The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment is a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army. The regiment is part of 33 Canadian Brigade Group, one of four brigade groups of 4th Canadian Division. The regimental headquarters and one company are at 187 Pinnacle Street in Belleville and on Willmott Street in Cobourg, with another rifle company in Peterborough. The Peterborough Armoury houses what was traditionally B Company or Moro Company. Moro Company also serves as the headquarters for the regiment’s Assault Pioneer Platoon. Normally, the regiment deploys as a composite, Ortona Company, while the headquarters and administration form Somme Company.

The 19th Alberta Dragoons was a cavalry regiment and later an armoured regiment of the Canadian Militia and later the Canadian Army. It was placed on the Supplementary Order of Battle in 1965. In 2006, it was taken off the Supplementary Order of Battle and amalgamated with the South Alberta Light Horse.

The 2nd/10th Dragoons was a militia regiment of the Canadian Army, based in the Niagara, Wentworth, and Brant regions of southern Ontario. It was formed in 1936 by amalgamating the 2nd and 10th Dragoons, both of which had served previously as cavalry units in the Canadian militia. After World War II the regiment was converted into an anti-aircraft artillery unit. In 1962 the regiment was converted into a field howitzer unit and in 1968 amid a downsizing of the Canadian Armed Forces the regiment was reduced drastically before eventually being completely disbanded in the mid-1990s. The regiment is currently on the Supplementary Order of Battle.

The 50th Field Artillery Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery was a Canadian Army Reserve artillery regiment based in Peterborough, Ontario. The regiment exists "on paper" on the Supplementary Order of Battle.

The Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough Regiment) was an infantry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia (now the Canadian Army). It was formed in 1936 by the amalgamation of The Peterborough Rangers and the 3rd Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons. In 1946, the regiment was converted from infantry to artillery and was later redesignated as the 50th Field Artillery Regiment (The Prince of Wales Rangers), RCA (transferred to the Supplementary Order of Battle in 1970).

The 5th Dragoons was a cavalry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia. In 1901, the regiment was amalgamated with the 6th Duke of Connaught's Royal Canadian Hussars – today now part of The Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal).

The Princess Louise Dragoon Guards was a heavy cavalry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia. First formed in 1872 as an independent cavalry troop, in 1903 it became a full regiment. In 1936, the regiment was Amalgamated with the 4th Hussars of Canada to become the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards.

The Midland Regiment was an infantry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia and later the Canadian Army. The regiment was formed in 1936 by the Amalgamation of The Northumberland Regiment and The Durham Regiment. In 1954, The Midland Regiment was Amalgamated into The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment.
